Any down side to sticking with Win 8?

Upgraded to 8.1 and all I see is MS tightening the screws and exercising even more control over people. Don't need this crap. If I stick with 8, what problems will I run into?

And please if you are being paid to answer posts like this, don't. I've heard it all before and your not going to convert me to your religion. I'm looking for a technical answer only.

TIA

Hmm, I don't think that there would be any "technical" issues with sticking to win 8 vs 8.1.

I feel that 8.1 has a lot more options however as you mentioned, they are "exercising even more control over people."

Only downside is long term support http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-8-support-lifecycle-windows-xp-enterprise,24665.html .

According to the chart, Windows 8's mainstream support actually ends on January 9, 2018, followed by the extended support end date on January 10, 2023. This schedule also applies to Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows 8 Enterprise N, Windows 8 N, Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Pro N.
With the 2-year limited support, Microsoft is essentially forcing updates on those who typically drag their feet in upgrading. After October 2015, these users will no longer receive critical security patches, new features and improvements, and could possibly be locked out of third-party app updates as well. The only way to stay fresh and secure is to update to the latest version.

Well, Windows 8.1 is basically Windows 8 Service Pack 1.

Sticking with Windows 8 unpatched is, well... sticking with Windows 8 unpatched... You do the maths.

tbh I'd go to 8.1 for the boot to desktop feature alone. that's the only thing that makes 8.x usable.

Sent from my SM-P600 using Forum Fiend v1.2.7.

That worries you? If it worried you, you shouldn't have bought Windows 8 to begin with. :colbert: Locked UEFIs to prevent alternate OS installs, mandatory Live accounts, mandatory Windows Store for updates, etc.

Are we using the same Windows 8? I dislike the UI as much as anyone, but Windows 8 on my laptop had secure boot turned off and I could dual boot whatever I wanted, I clearly had the option to make a local account instead of a microsoft account upon first setup (which I did), and the *only* update that came through the Windows store instead of standard Microsoft Update was Windows 8.1, which you can get the standalone .msi installer for if you really want. Not to mention that I did not need to log in with a MS account to get the 8.1 update from the store.

If we're gonna rag on Win 8, lets at least make sure our talking points are accurate.

The blind haters don't need facts to confuse their FUD.

Originally 8.1 required an online account, that may be where some confusion is.

It makes no sense to not go with Windows 8.1 if you are already on Windows 8.

That was only for the release preview (and IIRC, it was never intended to force you into an online account - even then you could have an offline account it just wasn't as easy), as of release you can skip the online account by clicking "create account" and then something like "create local account."

There is no debate: You must upgrade to 8.1. Period.

As mentioned earlier, from a support perspective, Microsoft considers 8.1 to be a service pack to 8.0. That is to say, Microsoft will cease support and patches for 8.0 two years after 8.1's release. Just like Microsoft ceased support and patches for 7 RTM two years after 7 SP1's release.

You can put off going to 8.1 for about another year and a half, but at some point, you're going to have to do it, so why not do it now and get it over with?

8.1 is better than 8.0 in every way, now that 8.1 U1 has fixed the major regressions in 8.1 (e.g., restoring the context menu in the network selector).

Wait, it did? Right clicking on network adapters in the side pane does nothing still.

In 8.1 U1, for recognized wireless networks, the context menu with "show est. data usage", "set as metered connection", and "forget this network" was restored. And the top of the pane should now have a shortcut to a Metro UI that lets you see the list of remembered WiFi networks.

I really dislike the MS decision to cut off support for 8.1 in early May if you haven't applied the 8.1 Update that came out recently. That said, I always keep up with the latest version, because each change makes 8 slightly less obnoxious.

IIRC, didn't they eventually cave and expand it to two or three months? One month is pretty short, I'll admit.

I believe 8.1 will get the rumored start menu update later this fall. Not sure about 8.0

As an aside, it is kinda silly because everybody who wants one has found an alternative, and everyone else has adjusted to not having one.

Also, this comment is rather silly

If I have seen a poster here who I suspected of doing this, it has been years. If you are looking to hash it out with paid posters from time to time, this is not the site for you.

If they bring back the Start menu, it will be strictly for the enterprise market where 3rd party solutions are generally not permitted.

I suspect this will be Win 9.0, since corporations have already made the decision to pass on 8, and Win 7 will be that much closer to its end-of-support date.
