any distributed clients for working on technological problems?

Only for the big companies that make their own hardware I think. Such as Intel, AMD, NVidia, ATI or the like. Otherwise I never heard of any others.

Here you can use your own PC's idle time to simulate and design a particle accelerator.

it is basically a project to help improve some of the internal parts of the particle accelerator, before it is built

There's a long list of distributed computing projects here, but the particle accelerator is the only one I see that fits your request.
