Any disadvantages to LCDs if you're not gaming?

Black levels aren't that great either.

some of the newer ones are getting pretty high enough in contrast ratio that black levels are pretty equilvalent to crts.

i guess the other possible disadvantage is some LCDs have a really bad viewing angle. i've noticed some of the newer gaming oriented 20 / 24" ones the viewing angle is particularly bad so that the colors at the top of a screen do not look the same as the same color at the bottom.

then again with CRTs you have more or less the same issues with magnetic fields.

also you could end up with dead pixels and generally monitors did not have those (though i had a trinitron that had a dead pixel before)

these really high contrast ratios come from aweseome white points 😉

i think an lcd is good even if you dont game, once you get used to it

Very true ... black levels look good on LCDs when theres bright white present but when viewing genuinely dark scenes in games or movies LCDs still leave a lot desired.

LCD are great for non game use. If you get a really nice one, you get awesome geometry and sharp text (use cleartype, of course.). Just dont get widescreen for office use.

Why not widescreen for office use? You can move two windows side by side or flip it vertical and have a really tall screen.

I tried Cleartype once, then I turned it off because I found it horrible.

Uncalibrated screens will make ClearType rather dreadful. While MS's subpixel font algorithm isn't the best, if both your LCD (and ClearType gamma) is calibrated the effect will work much better.

crap black levels for lcd...sad but true since i'm using one myself

That's what you get for using a crap lcd.

although my lcd monitor is by no means high end, i'd still say it's at least an average lcd monitor (Dell 2005fpw)

i prefer the compactness of my lcd but like the color and black level of my viewsonic crt much more

burnin?

I think that's only for plasma screens.

actually i had a dell 2001fp at work, and we had it set to not blank on the scrreen.

we forgot to turn one off, for well 4 days (on a long weekend) and what happened was the "login" prompt on winxp burned into the screen so you could see a faint box for one of those "ctrl-alt-delete" to unlock boxes.

so yeah it can happen. it just took well 4 days.
