Any disadvantage in using Cross-Over cables?

When connecting a PC to a hub you can use straight-forward or cross-over cables (please correct me if I'm wrong). When connecting two PC's together you need to use cross-over cables.

Question is, why not just use all cross-over cables?

Not all hubs will work with x-over cables. You have to have a x-over/straight-thru selectable hub.

And what advantage would using all x-over give you anyway? You only use them when connecting 2 pc's directly together because you need your transmit and receive to line up correctly, same as router-router, etc.

auto-MDX is what allows you to plug a pc into a switch with a crossover or regular cable. NOt all support (in fact, most Cisco's don't)

Rule of thumb, Like device to like device is crossover, all others are reqular.

PC to switch regular, switch to switch, crossover.
Switch to router, regular, router to router, crossover

I'm currently connected to my router using cross-over cables. I didn't realise not all of them will accept it. I stand corrected.
