Any differences with XP install discs?

I have an original XP install disc with a valid product key that is having problems reading a few files during setup. I cleaned the disc and even used a fine scratch remover but it's still getting stuck on those files. If I skip the files during the install, Windows runs a bit screwy.

I was able to get a XP install disc copied from an "unknown" source from my roommate so I can get my system back up. It installed fine and I used my valid product key to activiate it too. I installed all my frequently used programs and I've been using it for about a week now but this version just doesn't seem to run as smooth as my previous one. I get random stuttering here and there, system freezing, and other odd things that I never gotten with the legit disc.

I am going to try and reinstall it with my original again and if it doesn't work I guess I'll have to buy a new one. So from my experience I'm assuming there's a difference with the install discs. Can anyone confirm this?

Just download a new disc with bt. The licence only applies to your right to use the software - it doesn't (really) matter where you get it from.

Copy the files which are ok from your own cd to the HD on some unused partition. Then copy the files which aren't working from your friends cd. Then run the setup from the HD. Ensure that the cd you have and the one that your friend has are of the same version.
