Any difference between these two external enclosures?

Yes, we're not sure which ones you had in mind. It seems like any of them would work fine. You could go to Newegg and look up reviews for their enclosures.

For a couple dollars more I would get one with both usb and firewire. I have a hdrive in one and a plextor 708dvd burner in another. With all the different combinations of usb and firewire cords, it's nice to be able to hook up to almost any box and do whatever.
Mine is the same brand as this one you chose but also has firewire and uses an oxford chipset.

either one will work.

never having used either one, other than obvious cosmetic differences, they seem have to have similar feature sets (and for that matter prices)

me personally, i chose a usb 2.0 enclosure that had a solid metal case, an very quiet fan (80 mm fan), and an external power brick as a power supply. i wanted a stable enviroment for a 250 gig HD that might be on for days.

i think having the transformer outside the enclosure should eliminate the additional heat it would otherwise generate within the enclosure. this might only be important if you plan on leaving the drive turned on f0r long periods of time, and you have something like a large harddrive that generates heat.

if you plan to use the enclosure for a dvd burner/recorder...or only for a portable HD that you don't use very often for long periods of time....i think it doesn't matter at all...

That's the one posted on FW... Do you know of any cool looking ones like the one I posted with firewire compatibility?

I will probably be using for extended amounts of time... Do you have a particular recommendation in that case?

Do most dual dvd writers come with firewire support now?

As HS said, if you want something that's going to be on 24-7 get one with an external power supply and a nice casing, preferably Aluminum or Magnesium.
If you have USB 2 and aren't looking for compatibility with a wide variety of computers, you don't need FW capability.

Ugh... Don't want to lug around any external power source... Do all the best enclosures that can be used 24/7 have external power sources?

Well, you either evacuate the heat from the case with a fan or the drive fries. You mentioned it would be used for extended periods, I interpreted that to mean it would be in a fixed location. Now you are saying you want mobility.
The second drive you linked to has a bit smaller enclosure (good for mobility) and no annoying LED lights to distract you and make you want to smash it against a wall as in the first unit you linked to.

lol.... I thought the LED's would look sweet... They would always be easy to disable...

I do want mobility so I guess I'll go with the one with the LED's....?

That still has an external power source, the adapter is just integrated into the case itself. Bad for two reasons; 1. more heat and noise, 2. if it fails the whole case is useless.

How about this one?

P.S. LEDs are gay.

All 3.5" HDs need the external power. Some 2.5" HDs can run off of the 5V power from a 6 pin Firewire cable or a second USB connection.
