Asus cards always have a lot of crap I'll never use on them and a lot of proprietary software that I don't care for. I like the vanilla refernce designs myself.

BBA (Built by ATI)
Connect3D

Very good reference boards.

User reviews, HSF, clock speeds, game bundle all could differ. Compare them at newegg.com to start with even if not buying from the holy egg.

But would it bad to buy the Asus? I can order it online from ncix for $370 or buy the vanilla from a local place for $399...

Then get the ASUS of course ;). If the vanilla was cheaper then I'd get that, but in this case ASUS'll include a nice package + support + accessories/games.

Hmmm...had they been the same price, what advantages does the vanilla have over Asus that makes you want to buy it?

Nothing much. Different fan design probably (maybe the asus is louder but cools better), Vanilla probably doesn't overclock as well.

The Asus is a bad overclocker. X800XLs in general are bad overclockers, but the Asus one seemed to be bottom of the pack.

You do however get a very nice copper based GPU cooler compared to the crap cooler that comes on the vanilla boards, but they're bad overclockers anyways so it really doesnt make that big of a difference.

Bottom line, you can't go wrong with an X800Xl, trust me :)

Make sure that the Asus card comes stock 400/980. I know Asus makes an X800XL that is 400/700

The MSI has dual DVI as well. I have it, and was able to OC a small amount. I would suggest that one. Comes with many games (XIII, Splinter Cell: Pandora, and URU) and is dual-DVI.
