Any decent Socket A CPU coolers still available?

Search this forum( C&C ) for Socket A. Go back into the archieves as much has been posted in the last 6 months by Zepper & Kiwi.

There is an all copper job at sidewindercomputers.com that fits Socket A as well as P4s but it's $20 w/o fan. It is a ThermalRight though. Bit much but it could be used on most older systems. 😉

I like the Spire/Masscool (same company) Whisper Rock or Falcon Rock line. Get one with the copper core and three-hole clip. They are all about the same size/shape but have different 80x25 fans, etc. They work fine and fit in tight spaces because of the inward sloping sides. Removing the fan before clipping onto the CPU will ease that operation, then screw the fan back on. Nice and quiet. This is the first I used on my Sock A systems.

I use this on my Duron 1600 now: Thermal Integration V77L. Its fan is a bit feisty at full speed but cools well and is pretty quiet at 3/4 speed and lower. Fits in tight spaces and low-pro cases. My CPU is running 34.5 C and the fan is about 3600 rpm per Abit EQ. The fan that comes with is the 4500-5k rpm one. Best design for the money bar none, IMO.

No sense in spending more.

I find a CPU shim to be good insurance on bare die type CPUs though it should be pretty hard to crack the die with the V77L.

Both can benefit from a nice surfacing (lapping), but it's not really necessary.

I have a Volcano 9 coolmod with a replaced fan that has a speed control if you want that 🙂 It should handle a duron at low noise/fan speed 😉
