My friend is looking to spend as little as possible on a cd burner and I'm concerned that he will end up with junk.

Anyone know of a decent cd-rw for around $100 (125 max)?

If you want to spend as little as possible, the Lite-On 16x10x40x is about as little as you can spend these days for a new CD-RW. $71 at www.newegg.com. Of course, for just $9 more, you can get the 24x version, so it is up to your friend.

BTW, I have build many systems with Lite-Ons, and they work great!

That is, if you receive a Lite-on which actually works.

I just ordered a 24x Plextor. Yes. expensive. But I know that I am getting a quality burner... many people have had problems with Lite-ons. I was going to get one of them but decided not to.

Many people have problems with Plextors too. My Plextor PlexWriter 8/4/32 simply just died after 10 months of use, and I had to RMA it. Yes, some people might have had problems with Lite-On burners, but there have been MANY satisfied people with Lite-On. I have bought at least 10 most for other people, and they have worked flawlessly.

Nothing against Plextor, but why spend nearly twice to amount of money for something that does the same thing?

If nothing else..peace of mind. I did not want to order a lite-on after reading all the problems with the specific model # I was going to get, I just didn't want to go through any of that hassle.

Of course every product has the potential to croak but I've read about too many problems with the LiteOn 24x. Believe me I've been looking into buying a new burner for quite a while and just recently started seriously looking at every models pro's and cons on the web, and asking around in different forums. Lite-on WAS my 1st choice, but the problems spooked me. Plextor had some issues but I felt better about buying that than I would have a Lite-on. Just my personal preference. :)

Check the hot deals forum. I think Best Buy and Circuit City have the TDK 24X burner on sale this week for around $60. It's an OEM Sanyo BP1500P.

That's right, it's the case of whoever screams the loudest. Count me as another highly satisfied Lite-On user.

only one of the greatest burners ever made, the Lite-On 24x. priced at about $80 shipped from newegg, if i am not mistaken. i paid almost $100 for mine from newegg, but that was almost 2 months ago. very satsified with mine and i am sure you will be too.

oh, and w00t for me...

BTW murphy55d where are you hearing of all these people having problems with their liteon burners? So far I haven't even seen one post about anything critial (like their drive just died) or they can't burn for some reason...

So I don't see how your comments are even of reasonable cause without backup!

If you do get the Lite-On, spend the extra cash and go RETAIL instead of OEM.

if u've heard more reported problems w/ the lite-ons vs. plextors, it's probably because of the simple fact that more people own the lite-ons..

if your drive goes awol, RMA/return it...no biggie...it most likely won't.

another good drive for cheap is the aopen 24x model w/ justlink...it goes for roughly the same price if you can find it....i trust it more, in fact..

Well, I disagree with the Plextor detractors regarding quality, though not the price premium. They are spendy but first rate drives. Quality is top notch, which is why many professional duplication units use Plextors. They are great drives, but certainly not the cheapest. If you live near a Circuit City, Best Buy, or Fry's Electronics, though I would go for the $60 24x TDK mentioned above. If you don't, perhaps you can price match one of the ads at a Staples or with your American Express Blue credit card (these ads & prices can be found online, if you don't get the paper). The TDK also comes with Nero burning software which is better than the more common Adaptec software in some ways.

Yup, CDRInfo was one site where I found a lot of complaints. Also this very forum. People who have this "B" version of the 24x have reported problems.

I am glad you're happy with your burner. That's all I'm trying to accomplish too... albeit costing a bit more.

You're kidding...right? People all over the place are having problems...do a search here or look at cdrinfo. I just RMA'd one that crapped out. It's a crap shoot with Lite-On....many are getting good ones and are very happy with them but many aren't.
