Any decent 2.1 receivers with HDMI?

A friend wants to use just two speakers and a subwoofer, and needs a 2.1 receiver that supports HDMI or at least optical and has a sub pre-out. Does such a thing exist for $~250?

I doubt they exist. There is no point for hdmi to a stereo receiver. HDMI is meant for video passthrough with uncompressed HD audio playback. There is zero need for that on a stereo receiver. Besides you can just use the optical or coaxial input if you insist on a stereo receiver.

The Onkyos suggested are fine and can be used to passively bi-amp with the rear surround outputs if you are worried about squeezing out every ounce of available power.

As everyone else has stated, you can easily obtain a good 5.1 system for ~$200. Why get less functionality when 5.1 receivers are right at your price point? I have owned two Pioneer receivers and they both allow you to select which speakers you are using and which ones you aren't so you can get more power out of the ones that you are using. Also, if you're looking to use HDMI for audio, make sure that the receiver supports that. Many just use the HDMI ports as a pass through as a way to add extra HDMI ports to your TV.
