anyone know where i can find good prices on (2x512MB) DDR 550 184 pin ram. I have checked alot of sites and it seems that this speed ram is kina hard to find. So far i have only found a few places and companies to buy from and i figure that i am missing some deals that are available. Any info such as the brand or a site that the ram can be found would be alot of help and greatly appreciated.

Any particular reason you're looking for DDR550? That's not exactly a standard memory speed; anything above DDR400 is for overclocking.

this is my first build so i may not have a complete understanding. But from what i have read if my fsb on the processor is 1000Mhz and my mobo is running at 1000Mhz doesnt my ram also need to run at 1000Mhz to prevent bottlenecking. From what i have read ddr 400 running in dual channel would be 800 Mhz which would slow down my processor and mobo. I dont intend to overclock (b/c of lack of knowledge about the subject-but maybe later) so would purchasing ddr 550 ram be a bad idea. The info that i have gathered says that ddr 550 running in dual channel would be about 1100 Mhz, which is the speed that i want. Any help on the subject or recommendations would be great.

Guh?

You're not making any sense. There are no CPUs with a 1000Mhz FSB. And DDR400 runs at 200Mhz regardless of how many channels you have.

i am looking at an amd athlon 64 x2 3800+, which states that its fsb is 1000mhz. Doesnt my ram speed need to be as close to the fsb of the processor as possible. if so how can i do this if the ram only runs at 200Mhz??

Oh. You're a little confused, it seems.

The HyperTransport link on most A64s runs at 1000Mhz, but these processors don't really have a "Front Side Bus" like Pentium4 or older AthlonXP CPUs. At stock speeds, they use DDR400 RAM running at 200Mhz (basically, the HT interface runs at 200Mhz * 5 at stock). Unless you are overclocking, you just need regular DDR400 for Athlon64s.

So ddr 550 would pretty much be a waste if i dont plan on overclocking. Also i am looking at an Asus A8n-sli mobo that runs at 1000mhz.(You are right i am really confused). This motherboard would not slow down the processor at all would it?

What Matthias99 has stated is quite true.

This section of his post highlights the most important point in my opinion.

Thanks guys i really appreciate the help. I was very confused because after reading lots of reviews from newegg i noticed that everyone was only running ddr 400 ram, which lost me because of the misunderstanding i had about the fsb on the amd 64. i knew that there was no way that everyone purchasing the amd 64's were bottlenecking their processors with slow ram. Once again thanks alot this clears everything up.
