8-25-2004 Distributed Proofreaders Posts 5,000th E-book

Distributed Proofreaders has posted its 5,000th ebook to Project Gutenberg. The book, a Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature, by John W. Cousin, was proofed for this special occasion by over 500 volunteers. Distributed Proofreaders is a project that distributes the otherwise gargantuan task of correcting scanning and recognition errors in an OCR'ed text. The project has thousands of volunteers, of which many hundreds are active on any given day. It is currently the main supplier of etexts for Project Gutenberg.

I am glad to see that David. I have read a lot of ebook and have found a lot of errors. Some worse than others. Can this be done without human intervention? I would assume the program finds possible errors, but someone would have to review them.

I did this project for a little while. IIRC, you would get sections of a book to proofread and mark for corrections. I can't remember if potential errors were already marked or not. From what I remember, they were not.

Sort of like the DC project to count craters on the moon, a fairly manual process.

Thanks David, I didn't know about this. Just registered and am starting to proofread my first page.
