I am looking to get a new UPS for my datacenter, as it's going to be merging with another shortly. Apparently UPS sales are so awesome that pretty much no vendor out there is returning my calls/emails, except one. They quoted me an APC Smart UPS VT with installation at $62,000, MSRP on the UPS alone is $15,900, so they are quoting somewhere in the range of $40,000 (assuming incidentals at $6,000). Am I being cheap or is that insane? We would be running a new 80 amp feed to a break box on the UPS and hooking up the room to it. 6 circuits in total, very little work required for that part. The sales guy is being vague on what else needs to be done.

My facilities Engineer is telling me that the price is crazy, but neither he nor I have any experience with UPS integration.

They want $40K to terminate wiring on a datacenter UPS? Nothing else? They aren't designing and installing wiring for the entire datacenter? Then that's insane.
Or are they marking up the UPS to something like $50K?

I think they are trying to tell you they don't really want or need your business, but if you will pay their price, they'll make it happen.

That is what I thought as well, but I cannot believe that no vendor in this area wants business. I must have called/emailed a dozen.

Hire a local electrician to run the circuits. Buy the UPS then hire a few illegals to carry it inside. Those things are heavy.

We just had about 5 APC 8000XLT UPSes installed in our server room. Hooking up the UPS to the new circuits that were installed in the room took about 15 minutes.

Shipping Weight: 630kg. :Q

We have hilos :p

What type of business are you contacting for quotes?

Companies that deal with data centers exclusively. Perhaps that is my issue :p. I already have a quote for the UPS by itself. I am going to have the Facilities guy talk to his electrician about it.

They're about $10000-$15000 on the quote to me. That UPS with shipping and installation was right around the $40000 mark at one of our facilities from APC. Who are you going through?

$60k seems a bit high, but without an estimate that's itemized there is no telling what you are being quoted. You may very well see quoted work for items already done.

I have totally written off the company. They walked the area, did the measurements, saw the electrical work.

My vendor can get me the same UPS for $11,000, and I will have an electrician who does our other crazy work do it.
