I just got a PS3 this last week (to use as a media center and as a BR player). I hardly game but would like to download demos from time-to-time. The current firmware version of my PS3 id 2.85. I am trying to go to the Sony marketplace (or whatever they want to call it) and am told I cannot until I update my firmware.

Are there any issue with updating?

Why would there be any issues? Yeah, occasionally there are poorly reviewed firmware updates, but Sony quickly fixes them.

Go ahead and update. The newest firmware release is 3.15.

Flashing BIOS on a PC is more risky than updating your PS3 but people do it every day...

The changes to the XMB kind of suck, and there have been reports of randomly losing synch with controller (which I've experienced), but otherwise no.

There is always danger in upgrading firmware. I wouldn't do it unless you really want to visit "The Marketplace"

I usually wait a few days to let other people test it for me :)

... unless I need it to play a brand-new blu-ray or download a demo.

Game console's are much better in terms of reliability in upgrading firmware than PC's since the hardware is locked down so less chance of something getting corrupted. Sure sometimes things can happen to some people but it's not that widespread.
