any current hybrids available with manual transmission?

Yes, I believe so.. In order to maximize the efficiency of enging and electronic motor, CVT is the best (Maybe "only"?) way for that. I read it somewhere, but can't remember what it was.

In terms of power transfer to wheels, yes, a clutch is more efficient.

However, with a hybrid, the ability of a CVT to continuously vary the gear ratio to keep the engine at its most efficient point or to ensure that the batteries are charged at the most opportune times outweighs the efficiency lost by the torque converter and the overall setup is superior to a manual transmission.

With the Honda Insight there is a huge difference between Manual and CVT highway mpg numbers.

Manual is rated (new ratings) at 48 city and 59 highway
CVT is rated at 45 city and 49 highway

As far as real world drivers very few CVT drivers can get into the 80 - 90 mpg range, while standards can do 100 fairly easy. This is for trip and for a few tank mileages.

Other than the transmission difference the standard does do lean burn which definitely helps. I would take a standard hybrid over an automatic / cvt any day. That is one of the only complaints I have against a Prius.
