Any CPU price drops coming soon???

I heard that vendors are recommending AMD do a price drop does anyone have any info or a date when this might occur?

I believe dual cores are out. But these are focused on servers and high priced tickets.

Unless there going to be a desktop dual core later this year?

Intel dual cores seem like a better buy because of the price. Maybe AMD will just drop the price of dual cores to compete more with the intel chips. Granted the AMD is a better performer but pricewise you gotta go with the Intel.

Yes, I believe the dual core opterons are already out. However, the dual core Athlon 64's won't be coming out for a couple months.

Only multithreaded games, there are very very few.

Doom 3 engine based games are multithreaded, as well as a couple of Sonys MMORPG clients, and a modified version of the quake 3 engine.

In other words, it doesnt do much now, but optimization should come fast, especially from the new console ports as they are all multicore.

I just read the Dual Core Athlons will be out on the 31st. So in 11 days does anyone have any info on a price drop?

I dont understand people who justify holding off on buying say a 3200 venice because they want X2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but last I heard the cheapest one will be over $400, and its not going to offer many real-world gaming benefits, especially if you overclock. Can someone explain this logic to me please?

The boost from a 3200+ to a 4000+ isn't very big but adding an entire extra core willl do LOTS for performance. As long as they are willing to pay for the two cores, they will be happy with the results.

You gotta realize users on anandtech and most computers forums are enthusiasts. They want the latest the greatest and the fastest. So many ppl spend $200 for 10% on here. For most users true benefit of dual core wont come for at least 1.5 - 2 years. Anandtech users on the other hand will say in 2 weeks after having overclocked X4400+ to 3.0ghz that it is too slow. It's not going to be until Unreal 3 comes out that any significant game will even have a remote chance of benefiting from dual core. Given that the first multi-core console wont be out till November or so, there will be no waves on the PC. Then wait another 6 months to 1 year before some of these games get ported or are co-developed for multiple platforms. By then A64 will switch to DDR2, and possibly K9 core. Basically, unless a user is into some serious multitasking, for games it's better to invest into a graphics card time and time again. I am holding off upgrading till dual for a while. Right now it seems like the biggest waste of $$$. Give me R520 or G70 instead.

With respect to price drops, Venice A64 3000+ and 3200+ are cheap enough. I dont see a significant price drop for them. Even if 3500+ drops in value from $250 now to $200, is $50 today really worth waiting weeks for before you buy?

Ok, Thanks I think I understand now. I guess I am a little more budget-concious than these types of people. 😉

Im going to wait until I believe its June 21st.

AMD's dual cores come out in about 10 days and NVIDIA is to release its next gen video card and Im hoping for a current video card price drop since I will be getting a new video card with this as well.

Even if CPU prices dont drop video card prices should drop and it looks like they have started. Memory continues to drop but I cant see saving 20.00 possibly on that to stop me from buiding the machine.

By waiting to June 21st I hope to save maybe 10.00 or more on CPU and hope to have a better Idea of chip marking and overclocking on Venice or SanDiego.

I also hope to save another maybe 50.00 on video card as I hope the 6800 comes down at least that in the next month.

Maybe another 10-20 on ram by that time.

Its only 70.00 but thats 2 games by the way I look at it and its only 4 weeks away. My current system should limp along to that point.

Speaking of plummeting prices, LCDs retail value is crashing through the floor. I am waiting for the Dell 2005FPW to go under $300. 😀

Again: no, it will not.

Unless specificly designed for SMP, no game will receive a boost over dual cores.
