Crossfire Motherboard and Master Card RETAIL Availability by Wesley Fink on: Sep 27, 2005 11:42 AM
I have spoken witrh ATI and several mfgs this morning to update board availability. Between today and the 2nd week of October we should see RETAIL Crossfire motherboards appear from DFI, Gigabyte, ECS, MSI, Asus and a few others. RETAIL availability means you will be able to buy them at New Egg or other e'tailers at that time.

X850XT Master Cards are expected to be for sale RETAIL tomorrow, September 28th, with X800 Master Cards several weeks away.

I have a Gigabyte Crossfire AMD in my hands as I write this. It is the release Vewrsion 1.0 board and I received the release BIOS this morning
.

It sounds like soon.

I've been eagerly waiting for them to come out also, since eventually i'll need PCI-e, & so far, they look superb :D

We were supposed to be getting a shipment of the DFI crossfire boards the first week or so of October; however, we cancelled the order due to the very negative reviews and opinions people seem to have for them.

:confused::Q

Negative?

There's been some concern about pricing, but from what i've seen, there haven't been many negatives yet...

I've been seeing a lot of bad opinions from people...

1.) Apparently, there is a possibility of resolution problems, and not being able to run crossfire on a wide screen panel at more than 1600 PX (or something like that... I've been too busy to really read more into it)
2.) The performance of the crossfire solution, in current incarnations, seems to barely outpace the high end 7800's... so people just aren't willing to shell out $200 for a new mobo, $300+ for a crossfire vid card when it comes out, *AND* keep thier $250+ crossfire ready X8xx series card.
3.) Since it is new, people are very hesitant to try it... they are worried about bugs and such. So again, at $200, people just don't want to risk it.

Personally, I think crossfire will be a cool solution; assuming it runs well. But... nobody seems to bite yet.

We've had it listed on our site as a pre-order, for $199.99, (which is probobly the best price anyone is going to find) but haven't had a single order yet. Not one. This is especially telling since we are the only (last time I checked) vendor with it listed in froogle, and we are the only ones with ads on google with the board. Consider that when we did the pre-orders on the 4400's, we were getting 50+ inquiries a day for them... with the crossfires, we've seen 0 in a week and a half.

Funny thing, Kensai just PMed me about it, and I'll tell you guys the same thing: with our pricing, we would have only made $1, so I wasn't willing to trade the hopes of a dollar profit for the chances of losing a ton of money when we had to slash prices on boards that weren't selling :)

can't say i blame you Ben.

especially with the known usb issues, huge or not, that will be fixed in at the most 6 months with a new revision, i couldn't imagine a stampede for se early boards.

Bingo.

I'm going to wait until the next rev or so before we place an order. At least by then, prices should have fallen, bugs will be ironed out, and we'll have a much better feel for real world demand.

You guys are confusing Crossfire video cards with the Crossfire mobos.

SLI/Crossfire video = waste of money.

The Crossfire mobo ATi is making though, is another story.

The USB performance is the only issue i have heard much about so far, & otherwise, the mobo has generated alot of interest.
I forget what it's called, but the non-Crossfire version will likely be extremely popular when it comes out.

"the grouper" :)

i had my eyes set on that but i'm definitely waiting out the first revision. first off they're talking ~ $165 and secondly there are rumors of them using some lower quality caps for the retail boards. i dunno, i heard sapphire changed there mind after the uproar but makes me a bit nervous.

it looks like a fantastic board on paper though.
