Hah...I remember my first time trying an RXed WOD with rowing in it. Sucked.

I've gotten better since then, but half of the time I still end up falling over at the end with my feet still in the stirrups :p

Rowing is awesome and IMO, a much more effective and full body style of "cardio" than running or biking. Perhaps it's my lack of practice on it, but exhaustion from rowing also tends to "sneak up" on me much more than running or biking: one second I'm chugging along happily, the next my hamstrings and quads have gone numb and my lungs are on fire. Great stuff.

Ever try tabata rowing? :)

Hmmm, I might actually do some rowing today. My legs are pretty shot after Monday and Tuesday's WODs (first time I seriously tried full squat snatches yesterday...I didn't suck!) and I ripped my left hand, so a rower might be the ticket for an easy night at the gym.

No, but HIIT rowing is bad enough. Hm, that's funny though. I really like rowing because it's the one thing that I feel like, even when I'm tired, I recover more quickly from than something like running.

Heh, "easy" night at the gym. I need to start bothering my gym owners about adding some rowers.

Yup. You usually try to setup rules to ensure that the 20 seconds on are at maximum intensity. For example, measure either meters rowed or calories burned during the "on" intervals and add them up after 8 rounds. Then, each time you do this workout, try to get a higher total (similar to "Tabata Something Else"). Alternatively, just record the minimum meters/calories in any of the 8 rounds and each time you do the workout, try to increase your minimum (similar to "Tabata This").

Wanted to die.

Unfortunately, like most things in the fitness world, that feeling never changes. Concentrating on form will dramatically improve the amount of work you can do, but it will probably never rid you of that want to die feeling.

Yesterday I did a workout which was run 800 meters, row 1000 meters, run 400, row 500, run 200, row 250 with a minute rest between each activity.

I used to row for my school. I hated the erg with a passion. The 2k pieces were brutal.

edit: you can also use the rower to train strength instead of cardio. Try capping your stroke rate at say 18 strokes per minute and then maintain a certain split like 2:00/500m.

Greg Lemond once said of professional sport: "It never gets easier, you just go faster."

I remember when I rowed at university, our Friday afternoon sessions used to be two super circuits followed by 7x 2min on, 1off intervals on the erg. I'm still convinced that our coach chose it to make sure we were too broken to go out partying on a Friday night.

The last time I puked after a workout was after doing 2:00 of Tabatas on the rower. It's a great way to go from "0 to projectile vomiting" very quickly :)

I'm back to rowing on my C2 since injuring my knee in a marathon. Can't run at all now, major knee pain. Thankfully I can row without any pain and it seems to be helping in recovery.

I would much rather run, even on a TM, then to row. Rowing is tough mentally and physically. At least I can keep some of my aerobic capacity until I can get back to running.

So far I'm just doing mostly 30 minute rows. I may end up throwing in a day or two per week of some type of intervals.
