Any college students live in Salt Lake?

I am thinking about moving to SLC in the fall of next year. I mostly want to ski and live somewhere cheeper then california. I was wondering what it was like to live in Salt Lake City? Do the drinking laws hinder your ability to party? How is the college scene there? I would be attending a JC (not sure which, still looking into that).

On a side note, how hard is to get a job on one of the mountains? IS it reserved for locals in high status or can anyone with a HS diploma get a job there?

Thanks for the information!

I'm not from SLC. But I've been there a few times--and I have relatives there.

This a good option, then.

Hah...hah....LOL. Absolutely not (though I haven't partied there--it's not as clean-cut as people might perceive, although it's still good). If you want to party, you'll find ways to party.

I'm not exactly sure--but I would imagine it's not incredibly difficult. Good luck!

I am a college student living in down town salt lake city. I go skiing a minimum of twice a week on Mondays and Saturdays I have a regular job that's really flexible allowing me to work pretty much whenever I want, and I have classes on Tuesdays/Thursdays until about 1 in the afternoon. I know several people that have jobs at the resorts just because they went up and tried to get one. I also meet tons of people every time I go skiing who have jobs there who are from all over the world and are here just to ski bum and they appear to love life.

I wouldn't live there just for the mormons, but that's me.

Yeah - you know, the capitol of the Mormon community.
I guess that's right if you like to see the daylight, cause the homosexuals can only come out at night and have to stay in the shadows.

i just got back from a week long vacation there.

i was pleasantly surprised by the "party" scene (went to a few bars / breweries).

don't get me wrong, it is *not* crazy, but there are places to have fun. and the mountains so close are killer. i'd imagine between the 6 closest resorts you could probably find some work there

I have some family there, they live on the north end of Salt Lake. I used to make it up there every year for some skiing, but haven't been able to recently. Beign under 21, I was never able to go out and party. I mostly skiied during the day and hung out at night, hitting up the local park for some quality sleading. SO I never really got a chance to see the town, experience the local populace.

Is there a cycling community there? I am a pretty avid cyclist here in Sonoma County. I can understand if people don't bike much in the winter (it's cold!), but how about the summer? ARe there any clubs or local bike shops that do public racing?

Salt Lake City itself has actually become a somewhat normal city, where mormons are the minority; however, out in the suburbs it's an entirely different story. SLC's mayor consantly leads Bush bashing events. The Gay Pride parade is always a highlight of the year:)

To the OP: If you're interested in a community college, check out Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). One problem with Utah, you have to live here 2-3 years before you qualify for resident tuition, so school may be somewhat expensive. I currently attend the University of Utah.

As far as the drinking laws, there aren't any "bars," but "private clubs for members." It's no biggie, just an extra hoop to jump through.

All in all, I like it here quite a bit and would consider living here permanently depending on eventual job offers. That's a ways off though as I still have grad school.

A nice website I just stumbled upon: Text
