so some back story. i already own an LG 22 inch monitor (non glossy version of the one recommended in the LCD thread) and it works wonderfully for FPS gaming and it looks nice when playing back blu-ray movies. the problem though, is it doesnt support the full 1080p resolution required for these movies to look their best, and since i place my monitor about 3 feet from my face it doesnt exactly fill up my entire field of vision the way a friends 24 inch samsung did when i could still use it (he moved to japan lol). So, i am in the market for an image quality upgrade, without sacrificing gaming performance to significantly, and im trying to not spend more than $400-$500. i know dell has a 22 inch e-IPS panel which does 1680x1050 (linky) and i was wondering if anyone knew of any similar monitors, from a well regarded manufacturer, that did 1080 or 1200 vertical resolution. if there are any that are near my budget, or under it, i will gladly consider them, just NO MAIL IN REBATES. i have never once got my check for a MIR and have since decided to never factor them into my buying decisions. im not concerned about gaming performance at this resolution right now, since i can still game on my 22 inch until DX11 cards come around and i can upgrade my 9800GTX, so no need to remind me of this drawback. i already did some looking around, but i havent really been able to find much info, since e-IPS panels seem to be relatively new still. reviews are a plus

alternatively, i will consider panels using the technology the monitor in this review uses, assuming the monitor has adequate gaming performance, and the monitor itself costs less than an IPS based alternative

Just go with a nice looking/reputably manufactured TN, such as the Samsung models.

You're not gonna need an IPS for what you do... Also, cheap+IPS+1080P doesn't compute.

I would reccomend the BenQ E series, i own both the E2200HD(21.5" full 1080P) and the E2400HD(24" full 1080P) and they are great for gaming and movies. They are TN panels of course and you already sound like you know what that means and know there pro's and cons. my .02

lol well before i lost my last job i was saving up for a $700 1920x1200 monitor from doublesight (made it to $650 before i got laid off), and i was hoping with cheaper IPS panels showing up on the market i might be able to swing something. did some more searching around and i couldnt find squat since i first posted this. however, i did find a 27.5" TN panel for $340+ tax, which fits my bill nicely, has excellent reviews over the last 2 years, and most importantly, it's huge. i get paid on friday and i already have $300 in the bank, is there any reason why i shouldnt just throw out my prior expectations on picture quality and pick this up instead? most of my friends have bad eyesight, so having the biggest screen possible is a huge bonus, and at $340 it seems like a no brainer

Something about using all your money you have in the bank on a monitor upgrade seems like a bad idea. Especially after you just had to experience losing your job.

Yep, I totally agree with this. Keeping the house, children fed, etc... is far more important than toys.

Something tells me that the OP isn't in that situation, or I'm pretty sure (or maybe naive enough to think) that they wouldn't be purchasing a monitor if they were...

i lost this job over a year ago. i live with my parents and i was going to college full time until this last quarter, when the school budget cut a lot of classes i wanted to take to only being offered every other quarter, so i got a job to keep me busy. i also have a bonus coming up in a few weeks in the form of 8 hours of overtime pay (1.5x) as well as possibly another 2-4 of double time pay. currently every penny i make is spending money, and $100 of my savings is left over from my birthday 3 weeks ago. makes a bit more sense when you put it in perspective lol, i wouldnt be spending like this if i were living by myself

Doesn't matter if he is...having spare money is always important.

It's your life but in my opinion it doesn't matter if your parents are supporting you. At some point you will need some savings.

You're out of luck unless you're in Europe. Samsung has some new PVA models coming out with some impressive stats and low price, so unless those end up Euro-only they are worth waiting for. If you want MVA you need to just buy the FP241VW, but when the hell did that monitor come back on the market? It's like 2 years old and Anandtech just now gets a review unit?

Edit: The NEC 24WMGX3 is also MVA, but it's out of your price range and had some major ghosting issues

okay so my monitor got here yesterday, but i didnt have a chance to set it up until today. first impressions are that the panel quality is very similar (picture wise) to my LG 22", second impressions are that the thing dwarfs even my full tower case it's so big. the benefit of course is that everything is easier for me to see. text is a bit easier to read and i have so much screen space that i dont feel the need to maximize most windows anymore. Anyway, time to go watch a blu-ray on it and then play some crysis as a test run.
