I'm getting ready to purchase a new laptop for college. I am comparing the macbook pro with some sort of a notebook with a centrino duo. I am wondering if there are any recommendations, and if I should wait on anything that is expected to come out between now and late June. i.e. turion dual core, new dell series...

The laptop will be for gaming, media, and school.

Thanks all

Check on Dell Discount Coupons that could help lower your final price as much as $750 or sometimes higher % discounting.

If it is for the fall, i would wait last minute. As with everything technological, things keep getting better overtime.

That isnt to say that you are not able to purchase a laptop now that will carry you through your undergraduate studies.

cool, thanks guys. so nobody knows of anything specific that is going to be changing in the laptop world. i've heard rumors of new dell series, turion dual core, as well as processor changes to the macbook pro.

if anyone has heard any of the above, or different rumors please let me know

Don't wait until the last minute! One problem with doing this is that if the system is defective or you're unfamiliar with it, you have to deal with this problem while you're taking classes.

I've heard that the non-Pro MacBook may well arrive within the next one or two weeks. If you want something cheaper or more portable than the MacBook Pro that still runs OS X, consider waiting - just don't wait too long.

i assume that if you are looking for a gaming and media laptop, you have a relativly high budget. assuming school starts at the end of august, i would start getting serious at the beginging of july and order by mid july. hopefully merom will be out by then, and the next gen of mobile graphics. if you wanted to order now, i'd go with a dell E1705 for a 17" solution or a Acer Travelmate 8200 for a 15" solution.

i've looked into the 8200 series, 2gb ram 2.0 duo x1600, sounds really nice. as far 1705 the inspiron series seems pretty cheaply made, nice stuff inside but not too nice on the outside. how is the service on acer? on dell? and how do the two compare..what about asus as far as laptops?

thanks all

Isn't the merom core (new design for the Core Duo) comming out in like... ~august? Turion X2s in ~June maybe? Might be worth the wait for the speed increase and 64 bit capability.

To wait until Merom might not be a good idea. Merom might be out in August, but you won't see many manufacturers with notebooks readily available at that time (unless it was a company like Dell).
