pretty expensive for like $1.50 per cd. making backups on 4.5gb is kinda lacking, rather back up with 8.5 but the price is such a higher premium. hasn't DL discs been out for a while now?

The price could go down if sales increase so that the bottom line doesn't go down. Not many folks use or need DL disks. It's a low volume product.

$1.50 for a disk is not that much. What does a single lasyer +R cost? I would say that a DL disk would be worth 2.5 times whatever that is.

I remember in 1995 when CDR disks were $3.50 each! :)

its just that having 8.5gb for backing up data is more better than a measly 4.5gb. i have a lot of stuff i need backed up.60GB or so of data at least.

I remember paying about $33 for a 3 pack of Verbatim DL media. I have only burned 4 DL discs since their arrival (all successfully) I've seen them for $25 for a 25 pack spindle.

The best answer for that is forget optical - get an external HDD. Faster and easier. In the long run, cheaper.

sadly the dl arena is weak - the only ones that seem to reliably work are from verbatim, so even though there is competition, there really isn't...

I don't envision DL as ever becoming a popular format. I've never purchased a disk. I purchased LOTS of CD disks and DVD disks when they first came out.

Before DL drives were released, my reading of the technical issues of DL pretty much convinced me it was not going to be popular. It seemed like DL would be full of concerns about disk life and compatibiliity.

And, yeah, I'd be very leary of trusting DL with my data. Even if it was used for backup, I'd want the data somewhere else, too. I've seen too many CD and DVD disks fail without warning. DL would have to be even worse.
