Just curious, I have been using a v5 5500 for some time now, and I like it. But I am just curious if there is a card out there that is a worthwhile improvment that won't cost a whole lot?

Good point man, lol.

I mainly do the this, web-browising and what-not. But I do play games as well, and am I huge fan of Counterstrike.

I am upgrading my computer soon, from a T-Bird 800 to a T-Bird that will hit 1.4 gigs...etc... so I was thinking to check out what else is out there to upgrade. I think I should really get a new monitor though. I love this Viewsonic a75f 17" Monitor, but I would really like to get my hands on a 19" sucker.

you look like a man just itching to upgrade, too much money to burn?
no, the cards of the V5 generation are no great improvement. wait 3 months, GF3 and KyroII will be battling it out, you might like a cheapish K2 for the hell of it, or might really crave a GF3.

even though the GF2 is a better card than the V5, it is not enough of a difference to justify the upgrade. I'd wait till the GF3's come down in price a bit (and software comes out that takes advantage of it) & get one of them.

nothing out there worth the $$$$ needed to spend. just wait alittle longer like 3-4 months then price will be coming down quickly. GF3 is good but i doubt it will double you speed or improve your 2D quality. Best way to save money is buy the 2nd high end card in the market. but since V5 is at 2nd now its still a great card to have and to hold on to until the next great thing happens GF4?

As of next week my Radeon, GF2 Ultra, Quadro2 Pro, and V5500 will all be sitting in the closet. Not to be loving Nvidia too much but the GF3 is that much better than these other cards. My GF3 has consistently equal or better 2d at high resolutions and much better 3d performance than the 5500. The 3d alone at 1024x768x32 and up puts the 5500 to shame and yes I will now back the GF3 on any FSAA comparisons against the 5500 with the proper tweaks. Sorry for the 5500 series but the fat lady is now singing!!! :)

p.s. Until you have used both cards, do not even bother trying to make comparisons on the perceived performance or image quality differences. You have to use both cards to understand the differences.

If you watch DVD's while you surf the net a Radeon 64DDR is a great choice(as long as it isn't W2K) It has the "always on top" option so the screen doesn't minimize whan you click around. I miss that. But I have a VT Geforce3 now and sold the Radeon to a friend who had a Voodoo3. Besides you'll get great framerates in al games and the image quality to boot! BTW the image quality on my Geforce3 is identical to the Radeon.
