Any Canon DV camcorder owners?

I have a canon zr85 dv camcorder. Any way to get the video off of it without the included software? I know the canon digicam I have you can just connect to XP and it will automatically get the images off of it.
I have the USB and the firewire cable.

thanks.

You have to capture the video with a video editing app (Windows Movie Maker will work if Canon didn't include one)

Well, I unplugged it and plugged it back in. A menu, then cam up and it looks like it's letting me capture the video. We'll see in a few minutes.
thanks.

OK, I got it transfewrred but the quality is not very good. Isn't the DV camcorderes suppose to be relatively close to DVD quality? I don't know if there's a setting in the camcorder itself (currently has a dead battery). Any tips on how to get the best quality out of it?

What program are you using>??

Just Windows XP MovieMaker. I would rather not put the Canon software on my machine but if it will give better results I will. I would just think that Windows should be able to pull the video off of the camcorder and it should be better quality.

The whole point of digital video is that it appears exactly the same on both the camera and your computer, since it's stored in digits instead of magnetically. Odds are it's something on your end (your video card is poor and is making video jumpy, or your monitor is not good, etc). There's really no reason whatsoever that the video quality would be changed between the camera and your computer.

Well, it's really hard to tell the quality on a small 2.5" screen. I would hope the qality from a DV camcorder is prety close to DVD. Shouldn't it be?
As far as my pc goes, my video card is a 6800gt and monitor is a Dell LCD. If oter videos I download look good and dvd looks crystal clear I don't think it is on my end.
The output so far is not chpoopy, etc. It's extremely grainy.
So my question is, is the quality of DV supposed to be near DVD quality?
