Any Cable Modem OK?

I have a VERY old (7 or 8 years?) Best Data cable modem. Today my high-speed internet from Cox stopped working and the phone tech said we need to replace the modem (said he was seeing all kinds of errors).

I need to buy something local from Staples or OfficeDepot (close) or Microcenter (a schlep) because we can't go another day without service. Will this one from Linksys or this one from Zoom work?

I know that way back when there were issues with brands and compatability. Is that still the case? Can I buy any cable modem?

It should. Usually, you just need to call in the MAC address, etc, so your ISP can activate it on their systems. I just rented a modem from the cable company. At $3 a month, it'd take a couple of years to recover the cost of the modem and I might want to switch before that. No troubles with warranty either.

Check with the cable company web site (if you can! heh) to see what they recommend. The Motorola surfspeed is the standard tho.
