I'm looking for a laptop for around $1000 for college. Does anybody have any recommendations for which brand to look at. I've been thinking about ASUS or DELL, but I don't know too much about laptops. Main use will be internet, watching videos, basic word documents. I would like a 15.4" screen with at least a 1680x1050 resolution, or maybe even a 1920x1200 resolution if possible.

I like the Dell myself, just because I can get a very good one for cheap. Check out Dell small business. They have a sale today with up to 30% off coupon.

I can only reccommend what I have experienced and that is Toshiba and Dell. There are models that will fit your budget and needs. For me, I've used Dell but I ended up with Toshiba. After almost a year of use, my Toshiba Qosmio has worked almost flawlessly. I just installed Vista Ultimate and this animal is purring like a kitten.

BTW, get the extended warranty that covers accidental damage. It is good peace of mine...for me anyway.

I've only ever owned a Dell, in my case a Dell 8100, but they are easier to upgrade. I've swapped the stock 30Gig 4800RPM HD for a 60Gig 7200, the supplied nVidia Geforce 2 Go for a 3 Go.

I have had a dell for 3 years... and it still works great. very solid. I bump it all the time. it gets very much abused, and its stood the test.

Everyone I know that has Gateway has a LOT of problems. Always having to send it back. etc.

Dell is a safe bet, I personally like the IBM thinkpads. BUT, if I were in your shoes, I'd get something with a descent warranty on it.

sometimes thru Dell Small Business you can get a better deal on the long and strong warranty. But there is sometimes a tat for that t!t.
