Any suggestions on what to get for a first bow?

I've been looking at the Reflex Excursion.

Any thoughts?

I'd say it's probably slightly above average. I'm a good golfer/bowler and I'm decent with a shot gun so I have pretty good hand-eye coordination. I have a bad neck though so I'm looking for a relatively low draw weight (45 - 60 lbs)

Isn't everyone at least decent w/ a shotgun?

I don't know what type of ammo was loaded, but while there was a lot of recoil, I didn't miss the target Riprorin :)

I've been using the same bow for 15 years. Get something you're comfortable in and can handle well. Don't get caught up in the FPS, let-off % BS. My wife shoots a 30# bow, and hunts just fine with it. 95% of your ethical deer shots will be within 15 yards, with a stationary animal. I had a 'macho' friend once say that he only had ONE sight pin on his bow - when I asked why, he said that because his bow is at 90#, and at that strength, you don't need any others. Haha. Hope you enjoy this hobby, its a lot of fun.

Guess your "pretty decent" with a shotgun then. ;)

Well based on that I'd say you probably have a +1 or +2 modifier. Look for something with an increased critical hit range, and with a at least a +2 enchantment. Maybe even something that adds to dexterity.

Thanks. Yeah, I figured that draw strength was largely a macho thing.

Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills. You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills...

This seems like a pretty good deal:

It would be nice to try it first though. Maybe I'll see if anyone carries it locally.

I think my draw length is about 27"- 28". In the store I had trouble pulling back more than 50# but I imagine you get stronger as you practice. I like the fact that the weight range is 40 - 70#.

Looks good - remember that bow seasons are ending about now, so the deals will really pile up in the first quarter of next year, to make way for the 2005 bows.

Good point. Bow hunting season for deer opens Oct 1 so I have a little time.

I'll probably need to do a little practicing before hand though.

Would you recommend a draw strength of 40 - 50 or 50 - 60 for deer hunting?

yeah that is slight overkill.

I would prefer something lighter for actuan hunting. That way i can hold it and wait for the shot.

I need to get a new bow. the one i have is like 13 years old heh still plunking away though. Best $50 i ever spent.
