I have a High-Definition home theater with 106-inch screen FP system (not bragging, read below).

Anyone know of well produced (read: video quality) bollywood flicks on DVD ? Most of the ones you get in the US are bootleg and atrocious in quality (looks much worse on very large screens). Not to mention the movies itself that generally cater to the lowest common denominator.

But I am guessing some of these movies could be eye candy on a big screen .. IF the studio cared about video quality.

So, any movies worth it ?

Also ... good U.S sources for original bollywood DVDs ?

TIA

ps: OPPO upconvert DVD player really looks good on HD setup.

Distribution studios ? Kinda lost. I don't know that stuff well enough to know where to begin.

The problem with Bollywood movies is that they're so friggin' long, yet the studios/distributors don't want to split the movie on two sides or two discs. So they cram everything in there with crappy encoding. I don't know if its the low-bitrate or horrible mastering software (probably both) but even original discs I've bought (Yash Raj releases with hologram costing $20-$30 in the US) suffer from macroblocking and other artifacts.

The best way to watch an Indian movie is still at the theater.

Oh but to answer your question, Yash Raj is probably the best producer/studio/distributor. Look for some of their movies at whatever online store you buy Indian DVDs from (IMO the stuff you get locally is almost always bootlegged.)

Heh, IRC ftw. :) I am not sure whether pirating bollywood movies is illegal in the USA, but I get almost every new hindi release (w/subs, for my mom mostly although I will occasionally watch one) using irc, usually all DVD releases, although most are converted to xvid. Usenet can be used to find the DVD images.

Concur somewhat ... some of the costumes and color are hard to come by elsewhere. Not to mention the women.

i agree for the most part...but there are a few flicks worth watching, like 1 out of every 15 releases...and there are some good older movies too.

that shouldnt matter should it...i thought 3 to 3 1/2 hours could easily fit on one dvd.
