i just put my blu ray drive in my htpc, but it won't play any blu-ray movies. the drive recognizes the discs and i can read them. however, when i try to play a movie with the provided powerdvd software, i get the error: "a disc with an unsupported format in drive D:".

i have a leadtek geforce 7900GS HDCP edition and have the dvi port going to the HDMI port on my LCD TV.

HELP!

I think that was just the Australian version, and then was even proven to be false.

To the OP:

Does your LCD support HDCP through its DVI port? If it doesn't then that could be the problem, although it seems to be something with the drive and/or software you're using. I think the only software that currently supports playback of movies are special OEM versions of PowerDVD or WinDVD, and the only way to get them is to buy a computer that has it pre-installed. Also maybe try updating the most recent firmware version.

i installed the copy of powerdvd that my blu ray drive came with. i'm 99% sure my TV supports HDCP, as it is a 1080p LCD. this thing is killing me!

ok. somehow with all the fussing with it, i got it to play a movie. however, now i have a new problem. it's not playing any sound from the movie! ARGH!

I won't be owning a BD or HD-DVD drive until either 1) they are on a single drive, or 2) the CP is cracked. The ripping tools will probably be out within a week.

Anyway. Have you tried downloading the latest player software? I am betting that you are missing the audio codec necessary to decode the BD audio.

I haven't heard much about the PowerDVD software you mentioned, but I know there is WinDVD v7.5/v8.0 that should be available and that is what the Sony BD PC's and laptops use for BD playback. Maybe check CyberLink for an update to the PowerDVD v6.x software.

hmm.. i can't find windvd 7.5 or 8.0. i have the latest update for powerdvd. before it wouldn't even play video, it would say there's an unsupported disc in the drive. after the update it showed the video but no sound.

Welcome to the bleeding edge. Just wait for a PS3 if you're willing to spend $700 now on a B-Ray drive now (not to mention all the other hardware requirements).

well that's fine. i'm positive my TV supports HDCP since the video plays just fine and it's just the audio that does not work.

From Cyberlink (Link )

There is no audio when playing the Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD titles.

Issue

Can't hear any sound during Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD playback.

Cause

1. The volume is set too low or muted.

2. The speaker line is not plugged into the right Audio Out connector.

3. The sound card driver is too old.

4. You may have set the output mode to digital (S/P DIF) mode.

Solution

1. Check the Master Volume by double-clicking the speaker icon in the system tray. If the Mute check box for Master Volume or Wave is checked, please uncheck it.

2. Make sure your speakers are powered on with appropriate volume. Check if the speakers' audio line is correctly connected to the speaker out or audio out hole. The color of the hole should be light green.

3. Update your sound card driver. Please visit the Web site of your sound card manufacturer and download the latest driver for your sound card.

4. Use the configuration tool come with your sound card and switch off the S/P DIF output option if you intend to output the sound via a normal speaker. Similarly, if you intend to output the sound to an amplifier, please be sure to switch the output to digital (S/P DIF) mode.

so i assume you have it? still seems like a pain. BTW, the HDCP part is irrelevent for now as now movie studios are going to require it atleast till 2008.

I've got 19 BDR-101A's. I've had to send back at least 3 due to inability to read disks, but other than that, they're all working as they should.

the drive works great. i watched 2 movies on it already. however, i'm selling it off since i got a standalone unit. no sense in keeping it. i have it in my FS thread if anyone is interested. 😉

I wouldn't buy a Blu-ray Drive ;( ... well i am getting the PS3 which has blu-ray but i don't intent to buy any movies till Sony fix its Image Quality issue with its current movies. Who is dumb enough to use Mepg 2 still 🙁
