Any Bible experts?

I didnt read the comic, just the verse you posted. My understanding is that when you see God in heaven you cannot carry earthly love with you. Hate is a harsh word to be used, but it gets the point across. That you must truly love God more than anyone or anything else.

I thought it might just be that translation, but then i looked at 4 different ones, and they all say hate :Q

It means exactly what is written.........

Jesus expected all his disciples to leave their family to be with him.

You are not hating the true love you experience in familial relationships, however, you are hating the temporal temptations that arise in family life. I think it's sort of like platinummike said, but you are allowed to love your familiy (see the fifth commandment: honor your father and mother).

the passage means that to follow Jesus, you must love and choose God above all other things.

It is easy for one to put life and family first above God.

Winnar, this is the correct one.

Read on to the next part on how he uses a metaphor to describe it. If your family is not supportive of your faith, then you must depart from them. It's like quitting smoking. If you have that "last smoke", you have a higher chance of not quitting than if you just simply make a decision and quit. Many times in the bible it says to not look back, just move on. It is the hardest step in any life changing situation.

Original verbage changed in translation for the win!

Almost everything Jesus says in the New Testament is metaphorical. A lot of his passages get taken out of context because not only is the translation not perfect, but we can't relate to the interpretation as it doesn't match modern culture. If God had waited a few more thousands years before sending Jesus down, his parables would have probably referenced sitcoms and soap operas, and instead of God's imagery being that of a King or Lord, he would have been a CEO.

Since it has been translated through 3 different languages over the years, the passage probably read,
"If anyone does hate squirrels and otters, his football and beer, his Cookie Crisp and Crunch Berries ?yes, even his own love of porn ?he cannot be a real man."
