any benefit to faster durons?

Planning an amd overclocked system, and i'm just wondering if there is a benefit buying something like an 800 vs a 700. will the 800 overclock to a higher clock, or is this just that amd has locked the multiplier at a certain number just to fill need?

hope this makes enough sense for a reply....

I'd get the 700. I keep reading that the 800 Durons don't overclock as well. That 700 should hit 900 easy.

Duron after a certain week (I believe the late 20s) are locked. Buy.com has been selling unlocked duron but they are the earlier week models. If you don't want to gamble, people on the forums are selling 1gig durons for 65-80.

i am planning to unlock the processor, so i'm not as worried about that- just part of the tinkering, ya know? ;)

so for price/performance, the 700 is the one.

are there copper durons?

ahhh, so in addition to the cache issue, the chips are using .18 micron process die... didn't know about that difference. but i think i'll probably stay duron, just cause of the price issue. maybe later go athlon if i get a ddr chipset in the future.

The two AMD chips use the same .18 technology. The high end TBirds use copper. Everything else uses aluminum.

BTW, how can you OC without tinkering? ;)

well, i meant more tinkering than a softmenu- kinda get your hands on the guts....

You know, though regarding the fact that the 800's reportedly don't o/c as much, it doesn't seem intuitive to me... seems like you would need a higher yield (better quality) chip to hit 800 in the first place. wonder if this was just a sampling anomaly, so to speak.

What it looks like to me is that they all pretty much overclock to the same speed, like if you get a 700 or 800, they should both overclock to the same speed.. even a 600.. But im not exactly positive..
try to get one from week 31 to 39, they overclock the best i *think*

About the 800s not OCing as much, its just saying that you can't get as large of an increase. This is logical since all the CPUs OC well and they all have the same upper limit. Thus, if you start higher, you don't go as far before you hit the wall.

any particular reason why weeks 31-39 have been more fruitful? and what week of production are people seeing from shops these days?

I really need to upgrade my Celery 466! Are the one gigs really going for 65-80 bucks now?? Wow, that's a super price vs performance ratio :)
