Buy an RX480 on clearance for $200 or less and overclock it or flash it with an RX580 bios.

I have an RX480 STRIX OC, so as soon as asus put up the bios flashers for the RX580 STRIX models I grabbed the TOP OC one, ripped out the bioses, and flashed my card.

Works flawlessly with all the benefits of the RX580. Slightly increased, more stable voltage. Massively higher power limit (inside the bios, its set to 180 up from 110 watts).

I can only vouch this for the STRIX since it appears to be an identical or at least close enough design to work.

That is too risky for me to spend almost $200 and possibly brick it. Also we do not know the longevity of doing this firmware update.

At this point i will wait for the Vega announcement next month and hopefully the 580 prices will start to drop a bit. I also will look for a deal but otherwise I will probably get a 580 with only 4GB but i am willing to wait for a deal.

30 more watts should not matter to anyone, i am sure we all have PSU's that can support a 580. Does the 580 support Freesync 2? that might be a reason to get one over a discounts 480 but the lack of info suggests these will not support freesync 2 with HDR. However i thought i saw a box on a website earlier today saying it would get support for HDR. i wonder if Vega will get freesync 2 then the next mainstream iteration of cards will get it.

It matters because the energy efficiency gets dramatically worse.

If the energy efficiency is a problem why didn't any reviews jump on that? Seems to be working fine and better than the 480 which was pushing the PCI-E voltage/wattage(?) to its limits or beyond in a lot of cases.

did you watch the video?
It was a reference 580 review.

That is not a reference 580. No AMD marketing has that cooler design. That is a reference 480 cooler.

Those are the "reference" designs by AMD for the 580.
