Any bartenders here? Is it decent money on a part time basis?

What kind of money can a part-time bartender make? I'm looking for a part-time gig (15 hours or less) that pays about 200-300 weekly. Can a part-time bartender earn that much? Also do employers train bartenders or do I need to take a class?

You'll need to know somebody. Bartenders are a dime a dozen and the good money shifts at popular places always go to people with the best connections. That means either a long-term employment at that establishment or being the college roommate of the owner. You will not walk into a bar and get hired with no experience and you probably won't walk into a bar and get hired even if you pass a mixology course. You'd probably have to start as a barback and do that for a while to prove that you were reliable, then you'd get really shitty shifts that the other bartenders don't want because the place is either dead or filled with people that don't tip. You will not possible come close to the money you want unless you have an in and if you had an in you would not be asking here. Forget about it.

You most likely need to take a class (most bars only hire people with a class or experience). There are schools in most cities that charge between $250 and $500 (at least in Boston). Some community colleges also have classes.

How much you make all depends where you are, what nights you work, and how you interact with people.

BWAHAHA!!! Yes, it really is that bad, no, you will not get hired at TGIF or Olive Garden with no experience and even if you did somehow get a job you'd start as the service bartender on the lunch shift filling orders for the waitresses, NOT behind the bar dealing with customers directly. You'd work months and years of the Wednesday lunch crowd before you ever got near a happy hour or Friday night crowd and you would make $125 for your 15 hour week if you were lucky. I did it for a couple of years during the summer when I was in college, I had a good connection to get my foot in the door at a decent club and I STILL had to work a lot of garbage shifts where I made next to nothing to be allowed to work weekend nights.

Go into a bowling alley at 10am and watch the person serving the occasional breakfast Bloody Mary for the old-timers league. That's a bartender with experience and references. You're a long way behind them and you'd have to work your way up to that shift.

I'm not a bartender, but I have a couple of friends who are. They work in very busy places and make real good money form what they tell me.

Salaries vary between minimum wage and $60k+ a year. Kinda like with stripping: you make most of your money from tips, so if you're ugly and competent, you get a thank you and a dollar. If you're hot and flirty, you get a $20 and a BJ in the bathroom, and at closing time, you get your pick of whoever's left.

I've known bartenders who didn't have substance abuse issues, but I've never known a restaurant/club/bar that didn't have at least one addict on staff. $60k a year can go fast when you're spending $1k/week on coke.

The waitstaff culture is not conducive to sobriety, and the bartender is their king.

If you're female w/ huge knockers and a sweet tush you should make a lot of money. If not, you had better damn well pour me a double when I ask for a single.

Truth. I have never worked in the restaurant business but a lot of people I knew from school ended up there, and they're all junky alcoholics. One more reason I stay off Facebook, it's loaded with these people. That's why I always treat them like they're my best friend when I order food. A lot of these people are a paycheck away from prison or homelessness, don't piss them off - they WILL fuck with your food.

wow at haters above.

I know some bartenders that don't even drink.

I know many part-timers that make great extra bucks like $500+ for a thursday to saturday in tips + wages.

You do need experience though. Almost no bar will hire someone green, no matter how much classes you take you will never realize all the extra shit.

Talked to a bartender tonight that's working towards opening his own business and he was saying that at classy places it wasn't uncommon for him to pull in $2K/week.

ninja edit...:) I wanted to say at $2k a night they are either a head bartender at a major place or sleeping with the bar ;)

I know bartenders and waiters that hit 6 figures.

Pretty much. You aren't going to get a job bartending anywhere w/o bar experience. You'll have to start as a barback and work your way up. If you're lucky and have a reference, you might get min wage + a small % of the tips as a barback.

Would be much easier if you're a hot chick, one comes in the store I work at. She's OMGWTFBBQSAUCE beautiful. I'd say she's a pretty good but nothing spectacular bartender, yet bars/restaurant throw themselves at her offering her a job.

I have a friend who makes a decent living as a bartender. Of course she has large boobs and is fairly attractive.

So basically you want a job that you have no experience how to do that will pay $20 per hour and want to dictate how many hours a week you work (I bet you want to tell your employer exactly which days/shifts you are willing to work as well heh?).

Try getting 14 hours a week working at a McDonalds and see if you can swing 3 20 minute $50 blowjobs out back after you are done, that should fit your requirements.
