Any bands I should check out?

Rasmus - band from finland but lead singer can speak / sing in english.... have 1 song on fuse and can buy the cd for 10 bucks from amazon.com

look for Rasmus - In The Shadows

edit: GREAT guitarists
Eric Johnson
Joe Satriani

Metal, but not death:
Masterplan (1 album)
Helloween (loads - been going since the 80's)
Gamma Ray (loads - been going since early 90's IIRC)
Dragonforce (2 albums - new - made their break on mp3.com)
Rhapsody (Dunno)
Sonata Artica (dunno)
Sinergy (dunno)

All great bands, the bottom two less so though.
IMHO - Rasmus are the worst kind of crap in the world, but that's MHO.

Dream Theater (progressive metal)
The Juliana Theory (emo? indie?)
King's X (prog rock)
Matthew Good Band (sorta Pop, sorta not)
Apocalyptica (cello quartet that plays popular metal songs, like Metallica, among other stuff. check out their version of Grieg's "Hall of the Mountain King")

Peter Mulvey -- folk, acoustic guitar-type stuff. pretty good... he got his start performing on subways in Boston. currently touring the UK, I think. look for "the trouble with poets" or "out here".

Guster -- couldn't even begin to describe their music, but it's great. think, 80's new wave meets 90's alternative rock.

Joe Satriani (if you like guitar instrumental music)
Nuno Beetencourt
Population 1 is pretty cool
I used to listen to a band called Nuclear Valdez they were awesome, but i think they are out of the business now.....

without having any idea what you like, heres some of the most recent I've picked up and enjoyed

Modest Mouse - Good News for People who Love Bad News
Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth
Pixies - Wave of Multilation (The Best of the Pixies)
John Vanderslice - Cellar Door
