I am a technician for Hewlett Packard Pavilions, and do 1st level tech support for customers. I am only 19 years old, and have already broken into the technical business, all without any certifications or experience. After fooling with people 8 hours a day, and listening to the complaining and whining about simple problems, I was wondering if any of you guys out there have tried to help people with their computer problems before, and if anything utterly simple has turned into something totally stupid by the customer. I once had a lady call in who could not get her mouse to work. First thing I think is that she doesn't have it plugged in right, so I ask if she has it connected. She said she had not. I asked that she plug it in and restart the computer, because then it should work. Well, she insisted this wasn't the problem, but said she would do it anyway to pacify me. After booting up the computer, she promptly hung up without saying anything. Any of you guys have some good stories??? Would like to hear some....

hrmm...any idea if they can change the cases for the pavilions? somehow...the notches never line up...

anyway...here is a list of problems i have had with pavilions :)

1)problems with SMC PCI NICs
2)Having Norton and FProt installed at the same time causes system crashes...even though none are running in the background
3)ermm...other than that...just random BSODs

wait..did you want problems with HPs listed or our own stories with HPs? :)

1st level tech isn't exactly a hard job. most places have books with every little problem in it so you can answer anything with the generic procedure. i work as an on-site tech and the stupid call I ever got was when a lady said that her e-mail wasn't showing up on the screen and the printer isn't printing. when i got there, her computer was off and she didn't know how to turn it on and the printer was out of paper.... but shes a nice lady and also kinda cute :p

I used to sell computers for an unamed;) large retailer. I actually had a guy buy a computer from me and as he was walking toward the pick-up counter, ticket in hand, he turns around and asked me what a mouse was! Unbelieveable! It was all I could do to keep from laughing at him.

I had a newspaper editor get mad at me when I told him he should never own anything mechanical after he "unscrewed" the PS/2 connector for his keyboard.

There's a screw for that? Amazing!!!

Seriously, on which end? On my PS/2 keyboard the plug has no screw and the other end enters the keyboard through a small plastic hole that is the exact size.

I have a bunch of interesting ones, but here is a good one. Didn't happen to me, but the tech that I worked with.

The customer that had just purchased his new computer (386 at the time) was asking about formating 5 1/4 floppies. He asked if he could do them all at once. My friend told him yes, thinking about the prompt to fomat another disk by the old dos command. Well... the customer called back a few minutes later stating that the first two disks went into the drive ok, but he couldn't get the third in. It was stuck. We almost had to go home that day we were lauging so hard.

Another time I sold a used computer to an elderly gentleman who promptly brought it back saying it was defective. However, upon pluging the computer in and turning it on everything worked fine. I asked the normal questions.... Did you have it all plugged in properly? Yes. It turns out he was only pressing the monitor power button, not the cpu power which was located in the back of the unit. The tech that was helping me told him that the problem was fixed. He simply had a "user power initialization sequence failure." We showed the guy how to turn it on and he went happily on his way.

And then of course... there is the time that a used computer was brought to us with a cd stuck in an old 5 1/4 drive. What do people think... really.

Enough for now... I could go on all day. I'm out of the tech business now, but every once in a while I like to think of these things and laugh.

Yucky, he grabbed the connector and turned it to the left to get it out of the PC and twisted off all the pins.
