Thinking of getting the home premium upgrade, but i hear you have to install it over xp. Any bad stories of this not working right?

A clean install is always better than an upgrade. I went the upgrade path because I didn't want to start reinstalling the world.

My first attempt took 2 hours before I got a blue screen. Luckily, Vista backed out gracefully and XP came back. A two hour call to Microsoft yielded very little as to why I blue screened. At their suggestion, I disconnect my turned off scanner, printer, card reader and tablet. I also uninstalled the NVidia video drivers as well.

The second attempt went fine. After the install, I reconnected everything and installed the NVidia video drivers. Still have no idea what happened the first time.

You can do a fresh install with the upgrade version. It's just more involved.

First boot to the DVD and when it asks for a Key leave it blank. This will install a fresh version (you can even format the drive) as a 30 day demo. Once it's installed run the upgrade install. When you're done you'll have a fresh install.

You can also do the upgrade from XP with a custom install. This is, in fact, a fresh install. It just doesn't give you the opportunity to format your drive. It will put everything in you XP install into a windows.old folder. Once the install is finished all you have to do is delete that folder to get rid of any traces of your old windows install.

I've done In-place and fresh installs with the upgrade version and have had no difficulties.
