hey everyone,

I'm just wondering if any of you consider yourselves outdoor sport junkies (non-motorized sports). What is your passion? Have any epics to recount?

peace,
jack

I love hiking and backpacking. The only problem with backpacking is that it takes way too much preparation. Preparing food for a 2-3 day backpacking trip is a huge pain 😛

I do a lot of mtn biking because you get out in the woods, it's fun, it's fast, and it can take only a few hours to all day (according to how much time you have).

My latter years were spent backpacking at least 1 or 2 weekends a month.

Climax was a 14 day backpacking trip in New Mexico i took in '94. Hiked about 90 miles or so, it was great.

Lately, i've grown to enjoy the creature comforts of home living... 🙁

I love it too...don't do it as much as I'd like because of school though 🙁

I'm more into the *long* single day hikes rather than the multiple day types...

huge pain? i guess it could be. myself, i just go to the supermarket and that is it. no plan. but if i wanted to dehydrate stuff it could be a lot of work.

We do backpacking trips every year for about a week at a shot. I did it for eight years, but no more. The last time I did it, I woke up at 4am with a bigass bear sniffing my toes. That wont happen again.

back in britain we just have to worry about the midges. and of course the mad cows...
I'm supposed to be going hiking somewhere in w.virginia this weekend, should be fun. got to get myself a new waterproof first though!😉

I am a total backpacking addict. I basicly can't stop thinking about it. I'm sure you guys remember packing with really heavy packs. The current trend today is to go lightweight. You can go out now with an 8 pound pack (plus food). Backpacking is becoming more and more like dayhiking.

I'm doing the John Muir trail this summer ( 212 miles!!) whoopee!

that's always kinda been the *aim*...but what's different today than in past years? i could never get my pack much under 30-35 pounds for a decent sized trip

I'd say my epic outdoor sporting event was 2 weekends ago. A bunch of my friends and I piled in our cars and headed out to the Bogue Chitto River for the exhausting sport of recreational tubing. Once there, we donned our specialized gear (swimsuits and sunblock), loaded our supplies (5 icechests full of beer and sandwiches), and selected our vehicles (rubber tubes), and fastened all our gear, radio/CD player included, to our vehicles. I managed to down about a case of beer, only lost a half a pack of cigarettes to the river, actually managed to eat a sandwich so that I didn't pass out, saw several girls lose or take off their tops (unfortunately also one of my buddies decided to tube naked for about an hour :disgust: ), and never ever got my tube caught on a branch! I did, however leave with just about the worst sunburn I've ever had. We trained for this Olympian athletic event by sitting in the pool and hottub for 12 hours the day before drinking cheap champagne then going to a stripclub. I think I'll begin training for next year's outing earlier this year so that I can be better prepared.

What's that you say? Tubing isn't a sport? Well, I also play disc golf! That HAS to count, right? 😀

Try leaving the beer and cooler at home.

mainly fabrics and design. some companies are starting to make things out of 1.1oz fabric instead of the old 5oz. That is a large savings. Also there are lots of new designs out there.

today you can have excellent gear that weighs:

shelter: under 2lbs
sleeping bad: 1-2lbs
pack: under 3 lbs

traditional gear works out more like this:
shelter: under 8lbs
sleeping bad: 3.5lbs
pack: under 8 lbs

My last backpacking trip was a 70 mile - 6 day trek through Glacier Park. Can't wait til my boy is old enough so I can take him and my wife back there.

shelter: under 2lbs

pack: under 3 lbs

Dayum! I paid a crapload of money for my Jansport external frame pack a few years back, and it definitly weighs more than 3 frikkin pounds!

Yeah, the more you pay the more "features" you get. All of those "features" just add weight.

No "junkie" here, but I did go backpacking for the first time last summer with my g/f's father and step-mother.....we went to the Canadian Rockies I believe.....certainly wasn't an easy hike, for a first-timer, we did like......oh, I don't remember how many miles, but elevation was high, we went for 4 days, and the best part was when we camped out on the glaciers and the sky was so clear, you could see EVERYTHING.

That was a good time, definetely a fun hobby. Too bad I was burnt and sore like no other for the other day hikes for the rest of the 11 day jaunt. 🙂
