Any Audi owners?

My 98 Mazda Millenia needs a new transmission so I'm looking to buy a new car since my dad wants my car to replace his old car. I've narrowed it down to an Acura CL, Toyota Solara and an Audi A6. It has to be between 1998-2000 and I'm looking to spend no more than $12,000.

I've learned my lesson with cars where I can't do maintenance on it due to the tight space inside the engine. My Millenia was notorious with repairs and I would have to take it to the dealer because no one wanted to touch the engine. It has a supercharger that came stock. Would it be the same with the Audi's? I realize cars nowadays are more advanced and will require a lot more money to maintain. But at the same time, I dont want to buy a piece of junk only to have it breakdown months later.

That bad huh? I dont have any friends who own an Audi, but A LOT of ppl rave about the Acuras/Hondas. I can't see myself driving a Honda since many asian people in my area have one. 😉

my dad bought a 99 a4 with 79k for 8,000. its been going fine for 6 months now with no problems...people here who have never even driven let alone owned an audi will trash its reliability but if you take care of it, it shouldnt give you too many problems.

I can say in all seriousness that VWs are not known for being as reliable as a GM. But I can't say much about that particular model or Audis in general, I only have personal experience with a couple of Passats.

Have you driven any of the cars?

My only concern is being able to research the car before buying it so that I can find out what some of the known problems are. As for my Millenia, it was only after bringing it home that people said there were known issues with this particular model. I regret buying it since it cost way too much money to replace. The dealer wants $500 to change the spark plugs. I would do it myself, but i would need to remove the supercharger to get to 2 of the plugs. NOT WORTH MY TIME!

That A4 - does it have the 1.8T engine that is notorious for oil sludge problems? People don't base their VW/Audi bashing on nothing. At least in the case of the 1.8T they extended the warranty a few years.

Most of the people that Audi bash have never owned an audi, they just go on hearsay. Toyotas 3.0 v6, which was also used in lexus models, and the 2.2 4 cyclinder had horrible oil sludge problems, yet people don't continously bash it for being unreliable. I'd stay away from any toyota.

People don't go by hearsay, they go by statistics. And the statistics say VW/Audi are unreliable.

I do have personal experience with VWs - not exactly Audis, but they use the same engines, etc. My experience with VW has been horrible, but I know anectdotal evidence is useless.

If you get any high mileage European car, you are bound to spend a good deal of money fixing it and not just for things that break but for things that need to be replaced due to age.

I drive a 2001 Audi A6 2.8. bought it used last year. around $14-15k with about 58k in miles?..I think the 1998-2000 A6's were known to have more problems. The car has been great, no major problems at all. The luxury of the car is defintely a big

Audi's aren't the kind of cars that you'll want to work on yourself. It's really cramped under the hood of those suckers, and practically everything is computer controlled. Even things like oil changes would be annoying to do yourself, since you need a computer with the Audi codes to reset the service reminders on the trip computer.

That said, my 2003 A4 has been rock solid so far, and I have over 62,000 miles on it.

Its not heresay. There plenty of surveys and independant groups that survey owners for answer regarding to their cars.

Check out JD Power and Consumer reports...etc.

While car manufacturers can never produce 100% non defective cars, they use quality control to limit defective products and design. And it just so happened the Japanese are better at this.

IIRC, consumer reports listed the A6 as being rather low on reliability.

If you're insisting on an Audi, I'd take a look at the A4 myself.

I just recently got rid of my 1989 Audi 5000 quattro turbo.
Rock solid car, I drove it through everything and it never got stuck or died.
It became too much to maintain for the little amount that I used it.

you may want to post on an audi forum to ask if there are particular issues with a model year#

all i can say is that my brother's 2002 A4 is awesome😀

Sometimes statistics are misleading if you just take them at face value.

In the USA I would guess most Audis are sold to enthusiasts. Most Toyotas are sold as family cars.

If you look at reliability reports based on owner complaints, but don't consider the owner groups are different, you can be misled.

Enthusiasts probably drive cars harder, and are paying closer attention to a car's performance, hence they might notice things the average owner doesn't. Not saying it's definite, but more an example why statistics aren't that reliable.

btw, my ancdotal evidence would be the VWs I've owned were a blast to drive POS, but that was more than 20 years ago, and I didn't buy either of them new so it might not have been entirely VW's fault.

Heh, why did you bump this two month old thread?

Anyway... It's kinda funny seeing my pro-Audi comment from January, considering that my A4 practically tried to kill me just three weeks later. So much for the "rock solid" comment 🙁

I have never owned one but I test drove an Audi A4 and a Jetta with the 1.8T and they were both a driving pleasure.

A4 ...go with the 2.8 and get it used around 3 yrs with as little milege as possible obviously. You won't be working on it yourself but if you can find a good reputable VW/Audi specialists he can set you up with OEM parts that are not branded but are the same as the dealer only about 30% cheaper. Lamfrauder comes to mind ...they make all the suspension parts for Audi and they sell jobber too with the Audi 0's ground off. Sometimes you can still see them. Don't get cheap jobber parts especially exhaust ....you'll spend almost as much except you'll be replacing it after 2 yrs again. I had an Audi that had 225K on it with the original shocks and exhaust ...
I'm on my second Audi now a 2.8 Navy with white leather. Try and get a leather interior ...they stay new looking longer than cloth seats although Audi has a fake leather that's quite nice and authentic looking.
Every manufacturer makes lemons now and then. I never had problems with either of my Audi's except for cheap jobber parts on the suspension ...(a4's have around 6 suspension joints joints per wheel )

And before you ask ....regardless of how many Audi parts you find in a Jetta ........it's still a Jetta !
