Any Audi owners here?

I'm thinking of buying an Audi next year kind of as a gift to my girlfriend and I - was going to pay between $10-12K US and hoping to get into a '95 bottom of the line one.

Is there anything I should know about these - how are repair costs? Are they exceptionally reliable? Also, the bottom of the line (A4?) is how fast?

We both think they're as sharp as hell :)

You can try Kelley Blue Book to get prices on used cars. I don't know anything about Audis though. My girlfriend does like the TT Roadster, but she's crazy if she thinks I'm getting it for her.

Thanks - we won't be buying one of them :) We need a family car that is not grossly expensive.

I'm pretty sure that the A4's were introduced in '96 or '97, and second they would be way to small for a family car. The back seat in them is non-existant. It would be uncomfortable for even a child.

Also, for 10-12 grand, you are going to by buying a vehicle with incredibly high milage...probably > 70,000.

As far as speeds go, I believe the A4 will do about 118-122 stock, a turbo w/ a stick will do 0-60 in about 8.5-9.0.

They aren't blazing fast off of the line, but they do cruise at 95MPH quite nicely :)

Yeah you're right with model year - for a '95 I'd be looking at a 90 probably as a cheap low-end model. I'm quite impressed though, I found one for about $8k US (I live in Canada so thats about half a million here) with 70,000 miles - thing about them is they are one of the few cars that look up to date even with the older models. I'm also considering a maxima GXE...I guess I'd test drive both. The maxima is way faster of course but with an audi you can say "I have an audi" whereas "I have a nissan" doesn't work as well :) Snot factor in the Audi!

The Audi's of late of awsome cars. I don't own one myself, as I chose to go for the 330i instead of the A4 2.8, but they are very slick, and very reliable. I also think the A4 did come out in 1996, though I could be wrong about that. From what I hear the price range for a '96 model would be around 13-20 depending on how loaded it is, and the milage it has.

AndrewR,

The Fox was originally badged as an Audi.

Skoorb,

Audis are real reliable as long as they have been taken care of. My mom drive an 82 Audi 5000. Some of the parts can be real expensive but as long as you do your regular maintenence you shouldn't have to worry about to much. Any car you are serious about you should have checked out with a reputable Audi mechanic BEFORE you buy so there are no suprises.

Also - a 1.8t will save you about 2-4 grand over 2.8.

The 2.8 is the only A4 available w/ leather, and comes with the wood trim and a couple other extras.

The 1.8t is much, much easier to mod, and according to yakko, for about 2 grand, you can make the 1.8t pretty peppy :)

BTW - A '98 1.8t Quattro was my runner up to the Jimmy. The Jimmy won because of way better financing (5.9 vs 9.9), rear seat room, and hauling capacity.

I've already been "approved" for an S4(or the equivalent at the time) for my next purchase by the girlfriend :D. That's 5 years down the road though :(

I'm "approved" because my girlfriend really really likes Audis, so I'm thinking that next year when we need a car I may just surprise her by coming home with one.

One concern is that for the same price I could get a maxima under warranty. Its no audi but it is larger, faster, and gauranteed no pricey repairs...financing shouldn't bother me too much as I may just end up increasing my credit limit with the bank to pay for the car because I figure I can really dip down the price on a vehicle if I tell the dealer I'll buy it outright, and that should make up for the higher interest with a bank.

Everything on my Fox says Audi but the rear end and the grill (engine parts, windows) so that doesn't surprise me. They ARE expensive to repair but last quite a long time. Mine currently has somewhere over 220,000 miles probably (odometer broke at 138,000 several years ago). This is the second Fox that has gone over 200,000 -- the first was a 1988 wagon (my parents had two of them, they were given to me as they were replaced -- poor student!).

Now, my 1989 is just chugging along about 10 miles a day to and from work. It seems to work fine with some minor quirks like some funky stuff on the right front suspension (thunks every once in awhile), and it leaks just about every fluid it has except gasoline.

84 horsepower will give you whiplash!! :D

I can vouch for Audi's..I have a 1990 Audi 90 20v Quattro..it now has 257000 k on it or there abouts..still has original shocks. Great car reliable as hell and runs tight as a bull's ass. Go for a high-zoot one with leather if you can.The leather shows the age less than cloth. Also the quattro is good for us in Canada's winters. Buy one from a dealer and it will be in top shape for sure. One thing though...insurance is a bit pricey with a $500 deductable on everything...windshield also. They are not particularily fast off the line but on the Autoroute they cruise efoortlessly at 100mph with omph to spare if you need to pass (some BMW)....;)

Go for it..you won't regret it...snot factor included. ;)

1985 4000s quattro. everything electrical is broken on it, but the damn thing runs like a champ and will never die. 300k+ miles by now with original engine and drivetrain and pretty much every major part original. it's still a smooth driving car.
