Elementary backstroke I think it's called


You kinda do snow angel type movement


Minimal splashing, you can get going pretty fast and smoothly
like those college team rowing boats


Pretty much 0 exertion, too (about the same as speedwalking).. so you can keep the
same pace for quite awile
 
Freestyle (Front Crawl) is the fastest stroke for most people. But Breast Stroke takes less energy out of you. I would recommend Front Crawl until you feel yourself tiring and then switch to Breast Stroke.

I was doing that during my test. I didn't know about either of them, but I found out later I was doing the side stroke and the one you mentioned. The later uses so little energy, it's amazing.
