Any ATOT inventors?

For the ATOT folks who have invented something and filed a patent...

1. Did it require a lawyer?
2. Could you give me a brief outline of the process?
3. How much did it cost in time and money?

I have had many invention ideas over the years but they are usually already patented. I finally have one that isn't patented yet. I believe I would need to file a utility patent but probably wouldn't be able to create a working prototype. I would really like to patent the idea but don't want to have to spend 6 months and $10k to do it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

in about a year i am supposto innovate something at the end of my program. Im still clueless on what to do.

binister,

I see you're in California but you don't say where.

If you're anywhere near Silicon Valley, there's a fantastic resource there well worth visiting. I've used the place several times in connection with intelelctual property issues.

It's a place you can get authoritative answers to all the questions you asked, & other questions like that, without having to pay a patent attorney.

the Patent and Trademark Library Sunnyvale Center for Innovation, Invention and Ideas

If you can't get to Sunnyvale, an alternative is to talk with the UC liason of the OTT at the campus closest to you. I do that sometime too, great resource.

scott, I can't thank you enough. This is exactly what I am looking for.

Have you filed a patent before? If so, what was your greatest lesson learned?
