Alright here is the deal.

I am 6'1.5" and around 160lbs, certainly not overweight. Considering the fact that in 1999 (my senior year in HS) I was weighing 230lbs, this is a good thing.

However, I am looking to maybe get more cut. I am still pretty flabby, and would like to develop some abs along with getting rid of my love handles. I have been excersing an ok bit since late April of this year, with the miniumum I do being an hour of cardio 3 days a week (this is on busy weeks). I usually do about 75 minutes of cardio at the gym on different machines, or I bike for 70-80 minutes around me neighborhood when I cant make it to the gym. This morning I ran for about 50 minutes on a treadmill. I also do about 40 pushups and 80 situps before I go to bed (on week nights).

I also tend to eat farily well, I usually eat a cereal bar with a piece of fruit (apple usually) and a cup of coffee in the morning, a sandwhich salad and soup for lunch, and whatever I can find for dinner. I also dont drink any soda. The only thing I do really is drink alcohol 2-3 nights a week, I can cut back to 1-2 if need be but dont want to give it up.

Thanks for any suggestions.

If you want to get cut, you need to scale back your calories and keep track of how many calories you intake daily. (For cutting, you're going to want to eat about 500-1000 less calories) From your pic, it doesn't look like you're built with a lot of muscle, and being nearly 6'2", you might also think of lifting weights to boost your metabolism as well.

I do keep track, it varies sometimes but it is usually around 1600-1700

1600-1700 is already pretty low in terms of calories a day. The government agency (FDA??) considers 2000 to be the average. Alcohol does make a difference though. You also need to make sure you lay off the processed foods.

if you want to be cut and not gain much muscle lift weights and do less weight and more reps. If you want to bulk up then do the opposite. If you plan on exercising everyday make sure you mix things up. Like do upper body one day, lower body the next. If you have a local gym, they almost always have trainers there, or just ask someone that looks friendly and buff for some help, haha.

edit: May also consider taking whey protein that has amino acids(spelling). I take them and helped me gain around 5lbs of muscle weight in a month. If you do decide to take this, eat meals multiple small meals a day instead of 2 or 3 large meals.

I'd suggest some weight training and increasing your calorie intake if you do. You sound really skinny to me.... I'm 6'0" and about 200lbs (though I could loose about 15 of that), but I'd look scary if I dropped to 160.

Have a large & quality breakfast, go exercise in the morning (my preference), and maybe a bit in the afternoon if you feel up for it. Take days off if you feel you need it, it's actually good for you.

From what you describe, I'd say you do too much cardio.... that level of activity will keep you in great cardiovascular shape, but isn't condusive to building a larger toned body.

dude you are over 6 feet tall and weigh 160lbs. the LAST thing iw ould worry about if i were you is getting cut. what you need to do is eat your ass off and do heavy weight training to get some meat on your bones. once you have that, you then worry about getting cut.

i am 5'11, 187lbs, and i am trying to gain weight a little more before i go into my lean cycle. i am by no means fat, but i have a little flabby on my belly area because that obviously comes with the territory of gaining muscle. at 160lbs being almost 6'2, you must be a friggin tooth pick.

Im not really a toothpick. Like I said, I am just flabbier than I would like to be. This is probably due to the fact that I was a chubby kid most of my life, and only really started watching what I would eat when I turned 18. I wear a size 34 pants, so I am by no means I toothpick.

At 6'1" 160, I would NOT scale back on calories. I'd simply clean up your diet and do some serious weight training and cardio. Build some muscle with the weights and the light to medium cardio will burn what little fat you have. You should cut up rather nicely.

You are not as much "flabby" as you are just lacking muscle mass. Build the muscle and the "flabby" look will diminish signifigantly. Then you can focus on cutting any fat you may have left.

haha, i'm in the same boat, 6'4 and i weigh 175 or so, and you're definetly a toothpick, i'm not as skinny, fat wise anyway, as i'd like to be either, but every one keeps telling me i am skinny as hell, i do wanna gain muscle though, so i'm concentrating on that, i'll get rid of fat later, if i decide i need to, i started working out reciently, i've got a bowflex here at home though, so its really easy, speaking of which, i need to go do that...

well if you think you are flabby, then start lifting weights and gaining weight, and that flab won't stand out so much because you have muscle on your bones instead of flab over bones. if you gain muscle your fat/muscle ratio will greatly go down. also, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, which in turn means you can burn fat easier if you have more muscle.

don't worry about getting cut right now. if i were you i would eat my ass off, take 2-3 protein shakes a day, weight lift (atleast each muscle group 1 time a week, hardcore with heavy weights), and do this for about 2-3 months. then start to do the cardio and eat better. you have a while until summer when people will even see your body.

i am one of those people who has always been skinny and is hard to gain weight for me. i haven't done cardio in over 4 months at all and i have gained fat all around my body, but its not NEARLY as much as it would be if i wasn't working out. i am talkin i eat like crap. i eat fast foot almost every day for lunch. i take 3 protein shakes a day. i also workout hardcore.

since about mid august i have gained almost 20lbs. obviously some of it is fat. but alot of it is muscle. i am going to try to gain about 5 more pounds then going to go and get lean up as possible for summer.

That is a common piece of advice, but not entirely accurate. The reason people say this is that you are working out your body for longer, thus promoting more fat loss. However it is inefficient. You would be better served to just lift heavy weights and keep running/biking/swimming. Besides, gaining muscle mass increases your metabolism, which enables you to burn fat easier.

www.abcbodybuilding.com is a great site with forums, exercises, workouts, and all around great advice

I'm 6-2, weigh 200 lbs and wear size 34 jeans. I'm just amazed at how you could be only 160 lbs. Advice so far sounds right. Round out your diet so those calories are all healthy, not empty. Then work on building some muscle mass. Getting cut doesn't look good when there's nothing underneath to show off.

Congrats on losing all that weight. Just be careful, anorexia is a devil you do not want to know.
