People who have degrees in humanities such languages, sociology, psychology etc --

I'm just wondering what kind of jobs do you guys have..? How hard was it to get work with an art degree? Did you people get additional degrees other than the BA like MBA or some kind of post graduate diploma or something..?
How was your experience in finding work?

I am an arts guy too.. I'll be majoring in Political Science.. just trying to get a feel of what kind of future lies ahead..?

Share your experiences..

BA music, MA music performance.

Gave up because I didn't have a trust fund I could raid to hit the audition circuit, and I didn't want to be one of 500 qualified applicants sending in recordings for jobs. Didn't like teaching, and 90% of musicians make most if their income teaching. (Not performing.)

I bummed around retail gigs, delivered pizza, went back to school, spent a few years on a helpdesk, and start my first "real" IT job in three weeks.

Not here.

Go back and read the wiki link you posted; Political Science is a social SCIENCE, not an ART.

edit: Yes, I am aware that undergrad degrees in PoliSci are called "Bachelor of Arts", but believe me, if you tell people, "I'm an Arts guy, I majored in Political Science" they will look at you funny.

Italian literature and language and Music performance.
Was employed as a musician for a decade till an infected salivary gland needed surgery. Most employers in the business world just cared about having a masters. I do wish I hadnt dropped engineering freshman year but having three majors was a little too much.
The diligence I learned in the classics has translated into my business career now that I retired from music. A big part of college is learning how to learn and question what you learn. I have applied those skills to learning everything from other languages to new instruments and things like auto repair and meditation.

I don't have a degree, but I studied music theory extensively. Too extensively. Now I'm insane.

Yeah well you're in India...

I have to say music theory is the closest I have come to losing my mind. The descent into twentieth century music and tone rows and all that trash did more damage me than the boy scouts or being an altar boy...

Aural skills was a close second. At least you could pretend it was a game.

Well excuse me.

Asking for clarification is "trolling"?

If you want people to help you, you might
want to be open minded when they ask you to clarify your questions.

Good luck in College.

I have a double major in history and political science. Honestly, there's not much you can do with them on their own aside from teach. Though they can be useful for background if you go on to other subjects like law or journalism.

Most people who graduate college don't work in the field they studied because most people study useless fields.

If you're worried about your job prospects and don't want to teach, don't major in Political Science.

Also, law school isn't a good idea right now. Too many lawyers, not enough positions.

Part of the problem is high schools don't really provide a lot of information about job prospects in a particular field. I know when I started university in 2003, you had to hunt that stuff down on your own.

Even the universities themselves don't really have that info. I remember walking into the career centre and asking them what I could do with my degree. They gave me a whole list of jobs (nothing about prospects), and all of them required additional education. So I ended up going to community college a year after I graduated.

my cousin was a fine arts major... she and her wife (a photographer) are actually making a living out of it, selling their art. seems like they're getting flown off to different cities and countries all the time to have art shows.

my cousin also has a job teaching art at UCLA, but my impression is that she just keeps it for the health insurance. last I heard, she only teaches 1-2 classes/semester for grad students (and all she really does is hang out while they do their own thing, unless they need help/advice)

I have three subjects with me. English Language, Sociology and Political Science. The university requires us to study all three for 2 years, then drop one of them in the final year. I've decided that i'll be dropping sociology. Its boring. So actually i'll be majoring in English Language and Pol-Sci both.

you already know that a degree in Pol-Sci is an arts degree, still you're trying to be a smartass and say that if i am studying Pol-Sci, why am i calling myself an art major.

If that isn't trolling, then i don't know what is..
