Any Anne Rice fans here? (other good vampire/gothic inspired fiction)

I started reading Interview with a Vampire a couple of weeks ago and I'm currently on the last couple of pages of The Vampire Lestat which has been really good by the way. (the only thing I did'nt like was her spin on the origin of the vampire, it was kind of a lame explanation) I checked Queen of the Damned out from the library yesterday and I plan to start on it this morning. I've been hearing good things about the witch series, I'll definitely start on those once I finish off the vampire chronicles.

Who are some other good authors on vampire and gothic fiction?

one of my friends is obsessed with vampires and I know she's an anne rice fan. I'll ask her what some other good authors are if I remember.

Has anyone else noticed that women tend to have a stronger interest in vampires and other gothic type stuff?

I did'nt think so, I'm also one of the only few who noticed that Tupac sucked.

bram stoker, elisabeth bathory, brian lumley... if you're still looking.

EDIT: and janice harrell. she says some of them may be slightly pornographic.

Queen of the Damned is REALLY good so far, I'm about halfway though the book and totally hooked. I can't wait to see what the mystery behind the red headed twins is. I'm wondering they're actually the same characters as the Mayfair witches (I have'nt read that series yet though).

hmmmm:

i dropped out of college and eventually ended up at Mardi Gras, among other places, I didn't really have a place to stay but I kept running into people I knew from school and they'd let me sleep it off wherever they were. anyway, I was sitting outside St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson square with a few other punks and a lady walked by dressed VERY nicely with a man her age and another young man, I was very inebriated but I'm damn near sure it was Anne Rice, she stopped and asked us if we were hungry, then gave us two large take-out containers with untouched Steak and potato dinners inside.

Point of the story being I like Anne Rice she's a pretty nice lady.

whoa interesting story, I'd like to meet her in person. Anyone who writes the type of fiction she does would likely make for some lively conversation.

Hi there.

As for Deslocke's suggestions, while I can't comment on Elisabeth Bathory (never heard of), I would like to say something about the others. Dracula by Bram Stoker should be read if you're a vampire fan if only for its historical context, though I hear it is quite good. It's on my to-read list for next year, as is Interview. In the end, it'd be a good suggestions. As for Brian Lumley, I would advist avoiding him if I were you. His Necroscope universe (his vampire one) is far more modern horror with a dash of sci-fi than it is gothic horror. (Possible exception to this would be his two Lost Years volumes, but those you'd need to read several other books before to understand events that happen.) His other works lean a bit more towards Lovecraft's relm. While I love his stuff and have nearly the whole library of his books, I don't think they're what you're looking for.

Wow, enough rambling. As for my own suggestions, I would reccomend the The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series by Laurell K. Hamilton. They start off a bit more action and modern horror oriented, but I'm told quickly progress to gothic horror. You even get a love triangle between the title character, and the heads of the werewolf and vampire clans in St. Louis. The series is also like 11 books long now, and she's written one or two on the side. Probably your best bet.

Final suggestions, Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files Series. While only mentioned in name to me, it sounds like something else that might appeal to you.

Anyway, happy reading.

I've seen vampires with darker complexions.

I really liked the first few of Anne Rice's books, but liked the newer ones less and less.

Nancy A. Collins' Sonja Blue trilogy (in a combined trade paper edition) was a very good read.

Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake (vampire hunter) series was another one that started off good and went downhill after the first 4-5, but the first ones are definitely worth your time.

Not vampires, but recommended is The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop (also now a combined trade paper edition).
