I realized that the light fixture in my room had a bulb that always burned out quickly. There are two bulb sockets in the fixture, and I've changed the bulb in one of the sockets maybe three times while the other bulb is still going strong. I thought this was curious so I inspected the bulb socket whose bulb always burns out. This is what I found:

Now, that doesn't look good to me. What could cause all that green stuff to form? Is the wire causing the bulbs to burn out quickly? Is the wire part of the fixture or part of the house? Can I just replace the fixture to fix the problem?
