Any alternatives to Virtual Dub?

I basically wanna just trim some Xvid files like remove the intro and ending. Some of the files virtual dub would unsync the audio. What else can i use to do this?

Virtualdub will work just fine. Either you're doing something wrong, or not paying attention to the warnings that VDub is giving you about VBR audio causing async.

There's no other completely free movie editor that can do what you're asking.

you can give VirtualDubMod a try to see if it also messes up your sync. Otherwise, try the demux feature which splits audio/video so you can mend them back afterward...

Another thing to try is to convert the whole thing to MPEG-1 using TMPGenc, then cut the parts using the MPEG Tools --> Merge/Cut feature within the same program. You can always convert it back to xvid (avi) afterward.

I think you need to start your trim on a keyframe if you're using direct stream copy, though Virtualdub might do this automatically, I'm not sure.

Thing is, that's going from a lossy codec to another one, and back. That could introduce some artifacting, especially when reconverting to XviD. If you've got the hard drive space, maybe try the Huffyuv AVI format - lossless compression. But then, you've still got to convert back to XviD....maybe do that in two pass mode.

If all of these programs give you trouble, it's because you have VBR (variable bitrate) audio. One thing you can do is extract just the audio, make it CBR (constant bitrate) and then apply THAT audio track to the original video source... you never need to reencode the video, and you shouldn't either. But VBR MP3 -> CBR MP3 usually won't hurt much, besides possibly file size. But again, variable bitrate mp3s are difficult to work with. Pretty sure Nandub or VirtualModDub will do it though. Give it a whirl.
