I bought a Lenovo Y470 a little over 2 weeks ago. I wanted a laptop that was on the small/light side, and could play modern games at reasonable settings, without overheating. Here are my thoughts on this model

Pros:
< 5 lbs
i7-2630QM, 8gb mem, GT 550
Cooling is excellent, huge heatsink vent on one side
14" 1366x768 is acceptable
$915 shipped

Cons:
Screen quality is only average, poor viewing angles,
Build quality seemed sub-par. The body tends to creak and flex little. The screen hinge is awful, can't see it surviving too long.

I decided after the first week that the pros still outweighed the cons. Then, the laptop stopped charging. tried a couple outlets, no dice. Moved it to another room and it started charging again, moved it back to my office and it has never charged again (even moving it back to the room where it did). The charge light on the front doesn't turn on, which means it's either a bad power brick, or the charge jack is broken. I called Lenovo support and they are shipping me a new power adapter. I called last Saturday, and the new adapter is supposed to be delivered today.

My first concern is I'm not thrilled with the fact that, as a brand new customer, it took this long to get a new adapter. My second concern is if the new power adapter does not fix the issue then I essentially have a laptop that broke with a week's worth of very light usage.

What other options do I have? Are there any other models that include all of the pros above, at a similar price point? I'm prepared to return this model if there is a better option.

i don't really think there's anything else that would really fit all the pros

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-TimelineX.../dp/B004G6005Y
acer 14" w/ 6550 (5650 rebadge) core i5 dual core

alienware m14x is pretty spot on performance & price wise. it even has higher res screen options, it's heavier though at 6 lbs

alienware m11x r3 is pretty nice except for the generic crappy TN. it's probably more like a 12.6" notebook with an 11.6" screen no optical drive

the sony viao z is also nice,13" <4 lbs but the older model GPUs aren't nearly as powerful, and the newer models have an external GPU

they're A LOT pricier though

other than that i don't think there are that many options for small (sub 15") gaming notebooks
Asus usually has a few offerings in the 14" gaming ish notebook range, but they haven't released anything since the nvidia 335 T.T

Thanks! I'm glad you posted the Sony Z actually, because it lead me to a community of people who use DIY eGPUs. That is perfect for what I'm looking for! So I decided to return the Ideapad and picked up a Thinkpad E420 for $485 today. Next steps are SSD + memory upgrade + eGPU solution.

On a side note, I recommend people STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM LENOVO CONSUMER-GRADE PRODUCTS. Not only did my Ideapad fail after only 6 days of light usage (didn't even leave the house with it), but after waiting a week for a new power brick to test I unpacked the box on friday and they had sent a new power brick for a totally different model. The plug didn't even fit in mine. When I called customer support to tell them and ask them what to do, they gave me the same "it will take 5 business days to send you another power supply, please return the incorrect one". At that point I said f' it I'm returning this POS, gonna call the sales department when they are open on Monday and demand a full refund.

The customer support for lenovo consumer products is downright atrocious.
