any alternatives to the adaptec 1460?

i've been trying to install my cd-r onto my laptop for ages now; the reason i've been having problems is because the adaptec slimscsi 1460 isn't compatible with my computer. it won't read the card. i bought a non-brandname laptop, and i guess i'm paying the price now. the 1460 is the only card available in all stores around me, but are there any alternatives i could try out available on the internet? please mail me any help you can at starmachine@bigplanet.com. thanks.
