I thought this was cool:

Aimee Mann's music inspired and carried Paul Thomas Anderson's dreary epic Magnolia, earning her an Oscar nomination for the single "Save Me" and catapulting her into a spotlight she had actively tried to avoid. In fact, record executive pressure to create "marketable" pop songs pushed Mann to buy Bachelor No. 2 back from her label, causing some to champion her as an underground alt-rock heroine.

the amount of locking is getting ridiculous. if you even mention a lady the thread gets locked.

i swear if i made a thread about sally ride being an american hero and had a picture of her in front of the shuttle, it would get locked

Well Magnolia was one of the best movies I've ever seen, but when I just sit down and listen to Aimee Mann, she kind of bores me. I'll stick to my emocore, thanks.

Yes absolutely! She and her husband (Michael Penn) make great music, both together and independent of one another. Aimee is one of those rare artists that really can't write a bad song. Not to say that all of it is fanstastic, but I can listen to all of her albums straight-through without skipping anything.

Lost in Space doesn't vary much from her tried-and-true Beatlesque style, but that's what endears her to me so I love it. It picks up right where Bachelor No. 2 left off.

I really loved her stuff from Magnolia as well. Any other album or track specific recommendations from her other work?

Well, I recommend both Bachelor No 2 and Lost in Space. I haven't found a bad song yet on either of them.

edit: It Takes All Kinds from Bachelor is good. I prefer the version of Ghost World that I downloaded from her site a while back over the one on Bachelor. It has more of an acoustic sound. Also on Bachelor is a non-instrumental Nothing is Good Enough (from Magnolia Soundtrack). It's really good.
