While Avoton does not feature an IGD, every Avoton motherboard released to date includes graphics through an IPMI chipset and either 4 or 8 cores. This drives up costs and may be more than is required for a lightweight, efficient home firewall/router server. Ark lists the C2350 as a $43, 1.7- 2.0 GHz dual core Xeon Soc with quad Intel Ethernet ports and ECC memory @6 watts TDP. I suspect a reasonable quality, limited feature embedded board can be retailed at about $85 or less. Given the Q3'13 launch, I am not clear why this product is MIA.
Do manufacturers assess the demand for such a board as too small for production? Is Intel using this SoC as a placeholder that will be populated in the event that it sees some ARM'y competitor in that segment? Does Intel have a reference design to assist manufacturers? Is 3 quarters too soon to expect retail availability? What gives?
